Equinox's Multicultural Holiday Extravaganza To Benefit EEOP
BJRO HEADLINES HOLIDAY FEST
Vocalists Eade and King Join as Special Guests
25 November 2002 - Boston MA - The Equinox Music Festival announced this week that the Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra will be the featured artists in its 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza!, which celebrates the music of Christmas, Kwanzaa, Chanukah and the Fiesta de Tres Reyes. This event takes place Saturday December 21st, 8:00PM at the Copley Theatre in Boston. Appearing with the BJRO as Special Guests is the award-winning vocalist, Dominique Eade and Spoken Word/Hip Hop artist Curtis King.
Equinox's Holiday Extravaganza! is a multicultural celebration of the holiday season - and, uniquely, the only such show in town.
"We present", noted BJRO Co-leader (with Carl Atkins) and a founding member of Equinox, Bill Lowe (along with Leonard Brown and J. Thomas Duffy), "celebratory music from a variety of seasonal observation and traditions... working with old and new renditions from Kwanzaa, Christmas, Three Kings Day, Solstice celebrations... High Holidays from the Sephardic, Jewish and Islamic traditions..."
Ms. Eade, voted Best Jazz Vocalist in the 1996 Boston Music Awards, has also received nominations and accolades from Downbeat Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and NYC Annual Jazz Awards. Eade has been a featured artist in festivals, such as France's Toulon Jazz Festival, the Molde International Jazz Festival in Norway, the Knitting Factory's 'What Is Jazz?' Festival and many others. Recently signed to RCA Victor, Ms. Eade has been on the faculty of the New England Conservatory since 1984 and, in 1994, three of the eleven finalists in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition were her students.
Equinox presented its first Holiday Extravaganza!, on the heels of its debut festival, last December. Featured was Leonard Brown's Joyful Noise, along with Special Guests, Reader C. Vincent Haynes and vocalists, Ms. Shawnn Monteiro and Armsted Christian. The show benefited the Jorge Hernandez Cultural Center. This year, the Equinox Educational Outreach Program (EEOP) has been chosen as the beneficiary of the performance.
The EEOP currently serves seven schools in the Boston and Greater Boston area and has a number of new programs in the pipeline for 2003 and beyond. Along with the educational benefits, the EEOP often provides tickets to music events, such as the Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert (which celebrated its 25th Anniversary this year), that is, in many cases, the young children's first exposure to a live music event.
