AHLEUCHATISTAS “Heads Full of Poison"
Ahleuchatistas combine wicked precision with intense abandon, droll humor with analytical construction, and a sly gregariousness with uncompromising vision. This pair interweaves elements of punk rock, jazz, classical music, speed metal, grindcore, progressive rock, noise, folk musics from Asia and North Africa, electronic music, and ambient aesthetics, along with volatile, unpredictable improvisation, flowing organically in a virtual world of their own.
LIVING BY LANTERNS “New Myth/Old Science"
Living By Lanterns brings together an incandescent cast of Chicago and New York improvisers to explore music inspired by a previously unknown recording of Sun Ra. In the hands of drummer Mike Reed and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, who are both invaluable and protean creative forces on Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene, Ra’s informal musings serve as a portal for this cohesive but multi-dimensional combo.

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY, TOSHIO KAJIWARA, DJ OLIVE: djTRIO “21 September 2002"
Start off by dispelling any outmoded notions about taking things at face value – sometimes a DJ is not just a DJ, a record is not a record, and a turntable is more than a record player. These are the basic tenets with which to enter the world of Christian Marclay’s djTRIO, especially in the case of this live recording. Since the late ‘70s, Marclay has created art by masterfully mistreating both vinyl and phonographic equipment, using them both in a manner more consistent with the way an abstract sculptor employs raw materials in the service of a larger vision.
STEVE MOORE “Light Echoes"
With his latest outing under his own name, Steve Moore [of Zombi] has fashioned a sonic statement that can stand proudly alongside the work of the ‘70s trailblazers who inspired him. Light Echoes, Moore’s fourth full album and first album on Cuneiform Records, doesn’t merely extend his relationship with electronic music’s past — it lands him definitively in the category that can only be labeled “timeless.”
ALEC K. REDFEARN and THE EYESORES “Sister Death"
Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores have been making uniquely rewarding music for over 15 years. The group's unmistakable sound is the result of Alec's songs, which have poignant melodies and lyrics filled with doom-laden imagery. These songs are performed by a band who use unusual instrumentation (male and female vocals, accordion, double bass, French horn, organ, drums, percussion, electronics + many musical guests) in interesting and creative ways.
JASON ROBINSON “Tiresian Symmetry"
On saxophonist/composer Jason Robinson’s polydirectional masterpiece Tiresian Symmetry, he’s gathered an extraordinary cast of improvisers to investigate and embellish the framework of his compositions. The music’s richly suggestive harmonic and metrical relationships elicit a wide array of responses, but ultimately listeners find their own sense of order and meaning amidst the sumptuous sounds. For Robinson, a capaciously inventive artist who has flourished in a boggling array of settings, from solo excursions with electronics and free jazz quartets to roots reggae ensembles and multimedia collectives, Tiresian Symmetry represents his most expansive and exciting project yet.
