Comcast Expands 50-Mbit Service to Ore., Wash.

Starting next month, Comcast will expand its revamped “wideband" service, which offers speeds up to 50 Mbits/s, to Oregon and southwest Washington state.

The cable provider started rolling out wideband in Minneapolis-St. Paul earlier this year and expanded to Boston, southern New Hampshire, and areas of Philadelphia and New Jersey in October.

Wideband, also known as DOCSIS 3.0, will be available in two tiers for residential customers: Ultra and Extreme 50. Those with Ultra will get up to 22 Mbits/s of downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps of upstream speed for $62.95 per month. With Extreme 50, customers will get up to 50 Mbps of downstream and 10 Mbps of upstream for $139.95 per month.

Residential prices only apply to customers who also receive Comcast cable service, however.

“These speeds are only a preview of what's to come--in the future we'll have the capability to deliver even faster speeds in excess of 160 Mbps," Curt Henninger, senior vice president of Comcast Oregon and SW Washington, said in a statement.
