Carrera Quinta, founded by Colombian composers Javier Pérez Sandoval and Francy Montalvo have released Carrera Quinta Big Band.

In 2015, Carrera Quinta returned to the studio to record a new album with a big band. Conducted by Colombian Director Ricardo Jaramillo and recorded by the Latin Grammy Award-winning engineer Mauricio Cano, the 19 piece band made Colombian music history by blending traditional Colombian music with big band jazz.

The album features compositions awarded in 2013 by Bogota's department of Arts, Idartes, and one piece commissioned by Bogotá's Jazz Festival, Jazz al Parque, in 2014. The band blends Colombian traditional music from the Andean region with contemporary jazz, creating a new sound, full of intensity and power. The album was financed with an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. The mixing was made in Bogota, Colombia and the mastering in sterling Sound studios in NYC by Randy Merrill.

Most of the music featured on the album was composed between 2012 and 2013 in Louisville, KY, where Javier Pérez Sandoval persued his graduate studies in jazz composition with big band arranging legend John La Barbera.

Praise for Big Band

“Kudos to Javier Perez-Sandoval and Francy Montalvo for developing Carrera Quinta into a big band project that works so well here. Carrera Quitna Big Band captures the Colombian folk and jazz sound in compelling fashion and distinguishes this ensemble by defining a unique approach of their own that is sure to resonate throughout the jazz landscape."—Edward Blanco, All About Jazz:

“Carrera Quinta has crossed successfully into Big Band arrangements of their brilliant compositions. Their performance artistry is without question and their composing is stellar. The album Big Band is a full-blown expression of the sensitivity, delicacy and emotion that can be achieved by an arranger who knows what they are doing."—Travis Rogers, Jazz Times:

“Carrera Quinta encompasses a unique new perspective that interweaves the best of two worlds: contemporary American jazz and traditional harmonies and rhythms from South America, in this case the Andean region of Colombia."—Jack Bowers, All About Jazz
