Chris Pastena and Bruce Hanson announce the opening of Coda, a new music venue and restaurant at 1710 Mission Street at Duboce Avenue in the Mission District of San Francisco. Coda, a musical term meaning the place you return to, is an intimate 70-seat restaurant and 200-person venue. Opening Tuesday, August 4, Coda will present dinner and music six nights a week. Adam Theis and the Jazz Mafia will perform on opening night, beginning a weekly Tuesday residency.
Coda will be a new addition to the Bay Area’s world-renowned music scene. Over the last few years, San Francisco has not had a consistent place for local jazz musicians to perform on a regular basis. GM and Chef Chris Pastena and musician Bruce Hanson are committed to creating a musician-friendly jazz supper club in the Mission and establishing an energetic neighborhood destination for the freshest food and music. Pastena says, “We want to create an intimate setting where food and music complement each other and the sounds, flavors and textures are balanced together.”
Hanson, an accomplished musician from Austin, is creating a setting to showcase jazz in all its forms. Hanson says, “I love the feel of the club, the room is so inviting and the audience is so close, they can really connect with the musicians.”
Pastena, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, former managing partner and executive chef of Bruno’s and Chef at Eastside West in San Francisco, will introduce an affordable menu highlighting Northern Californian cuisine with Mediterranean influences and playful flavor profiles. His philosophy is to start with the best ingredients and “not mess them up.” He has been featured in many magazines and newspapers and was honored by James Beard Foundation’s “Spoons Across America” for achievement in providing food and nutrition education to kids, families and teachers. He also received an “American Culinary Gold Award of Excellence” in 2002.
Adam Theis and the Jazz Mafia will institute a weekly Tuesday residency. A mainstay on the Bay Area music scene, Theis says, “Coda will be a music venue that is alive. This is a big deal for the San Francisco scene. For us, a Tuesday residency has been a tradition since 2000, beginning at Bruno’s. This is what the Jazz Mafia is, a Tuesday party. We are thrilled.”
Menu highlights include Roasted Salmon braised greens red wine lavender ($12), Miso Fried Cornish Game Hen with cole slaw, ($11.50), Coffee Crusted pork loin with Jameson cream sauce ($14.50), Seared Cumin Tuna over Napa cabbage in a beet and horseradish dressing ($9.75), Truffled Fried Kennebec potatoes ($5.25), Strawberry and mint gratin topped with balsamic syrup ($5.75).
