The CNY Jazz Arts Foundation continues its arts outreach efforts with its last instrumental “Scholastic Jazz Jam" of their 10th Anniversary Season on Saturday, March 25th from 2 to 5 PM at their new arts and education center, “Jazz Central", 441 E. Washington St., Syracuse, NY.

The open jam sessions are the area's only opportunity for young musicians to learn the ropes of playing in public backed by professionals and develop their ability to improvise in the jazz style. “Young improvisers of all ages" are encouraged to perform the tune of their choice with the all-star rhythm section of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, including Rick Montalbano on piano, Darryl Pugh on bass and Larry Luttinger on drums. This trio of dedicated jazz musician-educators provides jazz instruction to a total of six area colleges: Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Utica, Mohawk Valley Community College, Colgate University and Hamilton College. They lend their user-friendly expertise to all wishing to sit in.

“We especially like to accompany the first-time improvisers," according to Larry Luttinger. “Its extra gratifying to see those eyes light up after a successful trip through their very first 'A Train' or 'Satin Doll' in front of a real audience. We're here to provide a watershed event for these kids".

The event draws participants from as young as 4th grade to avocational adults, young professionals completing music degrees regionally, and the occasional local music educator. Admission for the events is $3.00 at the door for students and $6 for all others. Valuable assistance in the form of a comprehensive grant by National Grid provides underwriting for this and all other educational activities of the CNYJAF, as well as funds from Onondaga County, as administered by the Cultural Resources Council and the office of Senator John DeFrancisco.
