On October 30, 31, and November 1st, The University of the Arts in Philadelphia will host an extraordinary event. Brownie Speaks is a 3-day symposium and concert series celebrating and documenting the life, music, and legacy of Clifford Brown. A web page has been set up on the UArts website outlining all of the events. When you click on the link below you will be taken to the symposium web page. You should then click on schedule of events, invitation, and registration form to learn all about the many activities that will be taking place.

Some of the artists who will be performing include Terence Blanchard, Benny Golson, Lou Donaldson, Marcus Belgrave, Carl Allen, Buster Williams, Mike LeDonne, and many others. There will also be panel discussion and presentations by some of the country's top jazz scholars and educators such Phil Schaap, Nat Hentoff, Jimmy Heath, and Lewis Porter. Clifford Brown Jr. will act as master of ceremonies for the evening concerts and Clifford Brown's sister Geneva Griffin will participate in two panel discussions. At one event we are planning to honor Soupy Sales for his commitment to jazz and for preserving the only known video footage of Clifford Brown. Soupy is expected to attend what should be a fun event.

All of the daytime symposium events are free to the public but pre-registering through one of the on-line forms is recommended. There is a fee for the evening concerts. However, even the evening concerts are FREE to any student with a valid ID from any school! Ticket information is available on the website by clicking the invitation link.

Personally, I'll be very excited to share the first showing of Brownie Speaks, a video about Clifford Brown that we've been working on for several years.

Please help spread the word about this amazing event to other jazz enthusiasts, educators, music historians, and Clifford Brown fans by forwarding this email to your jazz contacts.

Hope to see you in Philadelphia!

Symposium Director
