Space for this special benefit concert event is limited, and will be on a first-come basis. J. Bruce Bugg, chairman of the Tobin Endowment, said, “We wanted to find a way for the arts community to play a role in helping the Katrina disaster relief. When we came up with this concept and approached Jim Cullum, he instantly jumped on the idea, and his world-renowned jazz band will anchor this mini-festival. Jim will also secure some very special guests from New Orleans to participate. We felt this would be a great way to provide some much-needed help for the San Antonio Hurricane Relief Fund, which Mayor Hardberger established to assist the thousands of evacuees from the New Orleans area who are now sheltered in San Antonio.”
“It’s heartbreaking to see what happened in New Orleans, which has always been so dear to me as the birthplace of jazz,” Cullum said. “I can’t think of a better way for our group to help the cause than by getting together with some great musicians from New Orleans for a concert of traditional jazz that raises as much money as possible to help the hurricane victims. This can only happen through the generosity of the Tobin Endowment, which is taking care of all the costs so that the maximum amount can go to the hurricane relief fund.”
Mayor Phil Hardberger said, “San Antonians have an extraordinary spirit of giving, and an event like this very special concert just demonstrates how folks in our city are opening their arms to the hurricane victims. My thanks to the Tobin Endowment for making it possible and for the Jim Cullum Jazz Band for donating their talents. The San Antonio Hurricane Relief Fund will be the beneficiary of this concert, but all the thousands who attend will also benefit – from an evening of fantastic music and the knowledge that their money is going to be well spent in helping those people from New Orleans who have lost everything.”
