Long Island City, NY--Cecil Bridgewater, the internationally acclaimed hard bop trumpeter who was the longtime sideman with the Max Roach quartet, will join a jazz jam session at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at LaGuardia Community College on November 22.
In the old tradition of spontaneous jazz jams, the multi-talented artist will join the house band for an evening of improvisational jazz. The event invites local musicians to bring their instruments and perform with the guest musician and house band as well as jazz aficionados who just want to sit back and enjoy the music.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. in the college's Little Theater on Van Dam Street at 47th Avenue in Long Island City. Tickets are $7. Also offered is a discount series package that includes five tickets for $25. Those who are interested in purchasing tickets may call (718) 482-5151.
During his long, illustrious 30-year career, Mr. Bridgewater filled the roles of performer, composer, arranger, record producer, and educator.
His musical training began at home where his father, a trumpet player, encouraged him to take up the instrument. After study at the University of Illinois, he went to Chicago for further study and to perform professionally. After a stint in the army, he performed at the Newport Festival and several prestigious collegiate jazz festivals, most notably the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival, where he was the recipient of the Best Trumpet, Best Overall Musician, Best Small Group, and Best Big Band awards.
The trumpeter moved to New York in 1970 where he established himself as an international artist. He played trumpet for such artists as Max Roach and Horace Silver, as well as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. He shared the stage and studio with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Heath, Sir Roland Hanna, and Wynton Marsalis, as well as the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Art Blakey's Jazz His compositions and arrangements have been recorded and performed by Lena Horn, Venessa Rubin, the Uptown String Quartet, and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
During his guest appearance at the college, Mr. Bridgewater will join the house ban featuring Justin Robinson on the saxophone, Eric Lemmon on bass, and Bruce Cox on drums.
