THE BRENDA CAROL RENAISSANCE JAZZ FAIR ANNOUNCES A VERY IMPRESSIVE LINEUP FOR THE FEBRUARY 1-3, 2008 FESTIVAL

Following on the success of the initial Brenda Carol Renaissance Jazz Fair, Ms. Carol and Jon Long of Long & McQuade are proud to announce a particularly strong lineup for the 2008 Jazz Fair. Featured are some of Canada's finest up-and-coming young jazz artists.

Friday February 1, 2008 will showcase guitarist Nathan Hiltz, bassist Ross MacIntyre, singer Sarah Jerrom, Janice Hawke on vocals, Brenda Carol on vocals and percussion, guitarist Sam Dickinson, Ilana Waldston combining jazz and comedy, Kate Schutt singing and playing a Novax 8-string, and trumpeter Nicole Ramersaud with her quartet. Saturday's event will feature Nathan Hiltz, Ross MacIntyre and Brenda Carol plus singer-songwriter Sienna Dahlen on vocals, guitar and keyboards, singer-guitarist Layah Jane who was the winner of the 2006 Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Jazz. Vocalese master Ori Dagan, and 2005 NOW Magazine's “Jazz Artist of the Year" trumpeter, Brownman. Sunday's events, in addition to Nathan Hiltz, Ross MacIntyre and Brenda Carol, will have performances from singer Melissa Pisarzowski, multi-instrumentalist Christine Bougie, Tina Nodwell on vocals, French singer Cindy Doire and Tyanna Nikkita with her band. Additional artists will be announced soon.

The 2nd Annual Brenda Carol Renaissance Jazz Fair will be taking place at the Renaissance Cafe, 1938 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, ON starting at 8:00 pm each night. General admission tickets (no reservations) are $12.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door. A three-day pass is $27.50 advance or $35.00 at the door. Sponsors of the event are Brenda Carol, Jon Long of Long & McQuade and Stephen Gardner of Gardner Piano & Guitar Lessons. Ms. Carol has been a vocal performer since 1986 and a private vocal educator in Toronto since 1994. Her band ClaireVoyance has impressed many both on CD (their most recent release is Live At Hot House Cafe) and in live performances. In addition, she has performed with many of the who's who of Canadian jazz.

Celebrating over 50 years, Long & McQuade have proudly sponsored many major musical events across Canada, consistently encouraging both music education and high-quality musical equipment.

Stephen Gardner of Gardner Piano & Guitar Lessons has been teaching excellent musicianship and performance for over 30 years. Gardner has established a notable reputation as a solo performer, keyboardist and educator in Toronto.

Guitarist Nathan Hiltz considers Wes Montgomery to be the heavyweight champion of jazz guitar. Hiltz has worked with such Toronto performers as Kira Callahan, Laura Hubert, Bernie Senesky, Brandi Disterheft, Ryan Oliver and Jake Wilkinson. Bassist Ross MacIntyre was the musical director of the Garden Brother's Circus and other theatre productions around the Toronto area. He regularly performs on both acoustic and electric bass with Matt Dusk, Jesse Cook, The Shuffle Demons, Emilie-Claire Barlow and Eliana Cuevas.

Sarah Jerrom is a graduate of the University of Toronto's Jazz Performance Program. She has honed her skills by studying and collaborating with some of the most in-demand musicians in Canada, including Mike Murley, David Occhipinti, Melissa Stylianou, Phil Nimmons, Kevin Turcotte, Dave Young, John Sherwood, Heather Bambrick and Christine Duncan. Sarah has recently launched her debut album, Illuminations. Her other credits include a 2004 appearance as a featured soloist with the University of Toronto Vocal Jazz Ensemble's recent CD, Songs of Life, the 2004 duo recording, East of the Sun, with guitarist Harley Card, and in 2006, I Remember You. Janice Hawke has worked on radio, drama and guested with ClaireVoyance. She has been carrying a tune since 1970 and her Tina Turner impersonation is outstanding. Sam Dickinson was born in Toronto in 1992. He began playing guitar at the age of 8. He is part of the Humber College community music program and occasionally plays gigs around Toronto. He has studied with musicians like Ted Quinlan, Lorne Lofsky, Roland Hunter, and Emile D'eon. Kate Schutt who recently release her debut cd entitled No Love Lost, is a Harvard graduate and Berklee alum, and since 2005 a resident of Guelph, Ontario. Miss Kate plays a Novax 8-string, the instrument made famous by jazzer Charlie Hunter. Ilana Waldston regulary gigs singing “comedic cabaret with a jazz sensibility." Since the sell-out performance of her one-woman show “It's Only Me" at Trane Studio last summer, Ilana Waldston has been lauded for remarkable frankness, great comedic timing, and a well-honed ability to sell a song. Nicole Rampersaud is an undergraduate of the University of Toronto and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Nicole has studied with John McNeil, Joe Morris, Danilo Perez and Joe Maneri, among many others. Nicole maintains a busy performance schedule with a variety of groups that stretch the musical gamut, from Toronto-based Ken Aldcroft's Convergence Ensemble to Boston-based middle eastern ensemble Zilzala.

Sienna Dahlen has four CDs out under her name and is the first vocalist to be accepted into the Master of Music in Jazz program at the University of Toronto. Layah Jane, who has three CDs of her own, walks the folk side of the jazz street, recalling the more jazz-oriented work of Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones. Ori Dagan is a recent graduate of York University's Department of Music. He has studied jazz singing privately with world renowned jazz artist and educator Bob Mover and at York University with Rita di Ghent, Richard Whiteman, Sundar Viswanathan and Bob Fenton. Brownman (Nick Ali) was born in Trinidad, schooled in New York under Randy Brecker and called, “Canada's preeminent jazz trumpeter" by New York City's Village Voice magazine. Brownman will be featuring his electrified Miles Davis' influenced band, Brownman Electryc Trio who have been named the “Electric Group of the year" in the 2007 National Jazz Awards.

Melissa Pisarzowski, who just released her debut CD, is a recent graduate of York University's music program and performed with the Toronto All-Star Big Band for eight years as part of the swing style vocal group “The Serenaders." Multi instrumentalist, composer, lap steel, guitarist Christine Bougie has released her first album Hammy's Secret Life, in 2007. She attended Humber College for Jazz Studies, tours frequently playing lap steel and guitar for Amy Millan, and performs or records with many of Toronto's finest musicians. Shannon Butcher is an accomplished jazz singer both as a solo artist and performing with the popular group “Swing Rosie". Shannon recently performed with The Toronto Jazz Orchestra alongside jazz greats Oscar Peterson and Rob McConnell. Tina Nodwell is a vocalist who enjoys singing jazz, contemporary music and progressive rock. She regularly performs especially at Girl's Night Out (GNO) jazz jam hosted by the Lisa Particelli, playing alongside Norman Marshall Villeneuve, Peter Hill and Ross McIntyre. French Chanteuse Cindy Doire, has been extensively sharpening her craft as a songstress and performer since the recent release of her debut album La Vie en Bleu. From Franoise Hardy to Janis Joplin, English and French artists alike have all had a profound effect on Cindy's music. Tyanna Nikkita is a young singer/songwriter who is extremely talented. Her sound is a cross between Alicia Keys and Jill Scott covering the pop and blues side of jazz. The Tyanna Nikkita band will be featuring some of Tyanna's original music.
