With the Jazzschool's Spring 2010 Quarter just underway, and students in the Jazzschool Institute's Bachelor of Music degree program well into their Spring semester, Founder and Director Susan Muscarella is poised to shift gears.

“I'm pleased to announce that Academic Program Administrator Rob Ewing has been promoted to the position of Director of the Jazzschool Community Music School," says Muscarella. “Passing this baton to Rob enables me to devote my time to running the Jazzschool Institute and fund-raising. I look forward to this program thriving under Rob's capable leadership."

Ewing announces new spring classes including “Swinging with J.J. Johnson," a jazz trombone class taught by Wayne Wallace; “The Music of the Meters" (Jennifer Jolly); “The Music of Weather Report" (Frank Martin); “Jazz Rhythm Section Workout" (Alan Hall); “Accompanying Singers - for Jazz Pianists" (Ken French); and a variety of new harmonica classes (Winslow Yerxa).

Among the one-day and short-term workshops being offered this spring are a three-day Jazz Flamenco workshop led by Alejandro Carrasco (5/2, 5/9, 5/16), a Ratzo Harris bass workshop (6/5), and two workshops by Dale Fanning ("The Art of the Shuffle," “Internalizing the Pulse," both on 5/30).

In the course of the last seven months, students in the Jazzschool Institute's entering class have worked hard and attained many personal and creative goals. On 5/10, the Vocal Performance class will appear at Yoshi's Oakland to present Miles Davis's Kind of Blue in its entirety, under the direction of Vocal Program head Laurie Antonioli. The concert will mark the first time that all of the songs (and many of the solos) have been performed in a single concert by vocalists. Performers include Jazzschool Institute students Afi Ayanna, Avelina Nunez-Brown, Andrea Claburn, Rikki Gibson, Barbara Adamson, Kathy Blackburn, and Jua Howard, with accompaniment by Matt Clark, piano; Peter Barshay, bass; and Jason Lewis, drums.

Among the vocal classes being offered this winter: “Introduction to Jazz Singing" with Ellen Robinson; “For the Love of Singing," taught by Faith Winthrop; and “A Modern Approach to Singing Latin Standards" with Maria Marquez.

Ed Reed's 3-part workshop series, “The Jazz Singer," concludes with “The Song - Understanding and Expressing the Lyric" on 5/16. Kerry Marsh and Julia Dollison present a “Vertical Voices" workshop on 6/6 devoted to “Singing the Music of Maria Schneider." On 6/13, jazz/soul vocalist Valerie Troutt leads a workshop called “The Experiential Voice."

Concert Preparation and Performance for Vocalists, a customized mentor program supervised by Maye Cavallaro, features three singers per quarter. Kitt Weagant, Angharad Jones, and Audrey Martin are the designated vocalists this winter; they'll perform in the Jazzschool Concert Series on June 11, 26, and 27 respectively.

Trombonist (and Jazzschool faculty member) Wayne Wallace and his quintet, as well as the Jazzschool High School Advanced Big Band, will perform at a benefit gala next month for Florence Crittenton Services (FCS), one of San Francisco's oldest nonprofit organizations. The annual fund-raiser, to be emceed by KCSM's Chuy Varela, will take place at Yoshi's San Francisco 5/26, 6:00-10:30 pm. http://www.fcs-sf.org
