An Empty Room, the six part original series that explores the connective tissue between six uniquely influential artists from the Atlanta music scene, which debuted on Volume.com continues with composer, performer, and educator Tyrone Jackson on Sunday November 6.

Being born in the New Orleans, he embodies the spirit of the Crescent City. His boundless creativity coupled with harmonic mastery, he utilizes the piano as a blank canvas. The blends of jazz, funk and Afro-Caribbean melodies are ever present in his work. But of course, musicians are never solely influenced by themselves. Jackson’s teachers are a virtual Who’s Who of great jazz and jazz piano players ranging from Ellis Marsalis, Mary Ann Bulla to gospel/classical legend Moses Hogan.

Jackson is nationally recognized and has traveled the world as a solo artist and sideman. He has performed with the likes of Steve Turre, Larry Carlton, Carmen Bradford, Earl Klugh, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Vincent Gardner, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Wes Anderson, Greg Dawson, Jennifer Holliday, Karen Briggs, Clay Jenkins, Russell Gunn, David Sanchez, Damaris Carbough, Russell Malone, and Marcus Miller.

As a composer, Jackson has composed original music for Pulitzer Prize winning author Natasha Tretheway's book of poems Native Guard turned theatrical play, Pearl Clege's play, Tell Me My Dream, Ethel and this year’s Alliance Theater production of Nick’s Flamingo Grill. Jackson has recorded four albums—Dedicated, Another Voyage, Melody In Nede, and his newest release From The Mind Of.

He is currently a professor at Kennesaw State University where he is Lecturer of Jazz Piano and teaches a myriad of classes including: Aural Skills III & IV, Jazz Improvisation I, II & III, Jazz Combo, Jazz Theory, Applied Jazz Piano, Group Jazz Piano and History of the Blues. Jackson is also a clinician and teacher for the Rialto Arts Jazz program for middle school and is a clinician for Clayton County Arts Association.

About An Empty Room

Created and produced in the height of 2020 when touring artists had to pivot, the Empty Room series features quality documentary-style storytelling interspersed with musical performances where the up close viewer perspective serves as the sole audience member.

The Atlanta-based Kearns family created and produced the entire series when the music industry as it was once known had shuttered. The family captured intimate performances and never-before heard stories from musicians with deep Atlanta roots during a time when neither producers nor touring musicians had a clear trajectory for creation. “When the artists asked 'What do you want me to play?' I told them: Whatever you would play if you were sitting by yourself in your living room,” says Martin “Marty” Kearns.

Marty's son Aaron who filmed and edited the series shared, “When it comes to my camerawork, specifically handheld, I have the emphasis on the camera being an extension of my own point of view. For that brief moment, I subject all my vision solely through the camera observing the world like I would through my own eyes.”
