Jazz may be the only form of popular music that has a healthy respect for its elderly practitioners. Pop music has an age limit of 25-and-under and rock music tends to become a parody of itself as bands get older (just ask the Rolling Stones). Jazz though remains vibrant not only due to new infusions of talent but also old masters leading the way. As our Cover Story subject Clark Terry (pg.9) approaches 84 years of age, he maintains a energetic touring schedule that would tax someone half his age, appearing as a guest performer four times this month.
Another piece of jazz history in New York is the Brooklyn Paramount Theater (Special Feature, pg.24). This month, a celebration of its history (and the first time jazz has graced its stage since 1971) will take place with a blowout concert on the 15th with informative symposia all throughout the day. One of the featured performers at the above event is another historical treasure: trombonist Eddie Bert (Encore, pg.27).
