DORADO SCHMITT AND THE DJANGO REINHARDT FESTIVAL ALL-STARS
FEATURING HARRY ALLEN
Dorado Schmitt and the Django Reinhardt Festival
The Django Reinhardt Festival was launched in 2000 as the first ever festival of its kind in America. They established a home at the legendary club, Birdland, in New York City. The Festival celebrates the music of legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt who teamed with famed jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli in the 30's and 40's to create the Quintet of the Hot club de France, which went on to become one of the most important jazz partnerships in history. Django played with a virtuosity unmatched to this day and an originality that inspires young guitarists all over the world to continue perpetuating his legacy. 50 years after its creation, the music is still 'cutting edge' and is resurging all over the world.
The Django Reinhardt Festival serves to carry on this legacy with the top players from Europe combined with America's great jazz stars to bring virtuosity, romantic melodies, and camaraderie that Reinhardt's legacy demands. The group includes famed French guitar extraordinaire, Dorado Schmitt on lead guitar, his son Samson Schmitt, lead and rhythm guitar, Ludovic Beier, accordion and accordina, Pierre Blanchard, violin and Brian Torff on bass.
Harry Allen
BMG recording artist and saxophonist Harry Allen has over twenty recordings to his name. He has performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide, frequently touring the United States, Europe and the Far East. Allen's albums have topped the favorites lists of critics and audiences alike, winning a slew of awards including the prestigious Gold Disc Award and the New Star Award presented by Japan's Swing Journal Magazine.
CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE BAND
Grammy Award-winner Christian McBride is THE bassist-in-demand. Over the course of three albums as a leader and over a hundred as a sideman, Christian McBride has arguably become the most acclaimed acoustic and electric bassist to emerge from the jazz world of the 1990's. His passion for musical diversity has led him to work with everyone from Chick Corea to Pat Metheny, from Kathleen Battle to D'Angelo, from Diane Krall to Bruce Hornsby, from Quincy Jones to Sting. However, it is his own recordings - albums that encompass a diverse canon of original compositions and imaginatively arranged covers - that reveal the totality of his musicianship.
PAULA WEST GROUP
With a particular dusky soulfulness, Paula West has captured the hearts of critics and audiences from coast to coast. Known and respected for her creative and distinct repertoire, West adds her own depth and drama to whichever song she chooses for the moment, creating whole new frameworks of meaning for American favorites. In January 2004, West tied with Dianne Reeves for the New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist. Her critically acclaimed albums include Temptation, Restless and Come What May, which received the California Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Album. She has made guest appearances on Eric Reed's Max Jazz Christmas CD, Merry Magic and Frank Mantooth's final project, Ladies Sing for Lovers, featuring Karrin Allyson, Ann Hampton Callaway, Sheila Jordan and Oleta Adams.
NICHOLAS PAYTON QUINTET
One of the brightest new trumpet stars to emerge in the 1990s, Nicholas Payton combines references to his New Orleans heritage with the Young Lions' brand of hard bop and a warm sound. He graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and studied with Ellis Marsalis. In 1992 he toured with Marcus Roberts, in 1994 he toured Europe with Jazz Futures II. Payton has also toured with Elvin Jones and worked with the Jazz at Lincoln Center program. He has recorded with Jones and with the New Orleans Collective on Evidence. His solo career bloomed on 1998's Payton's Place, which featured cameos by Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove. Nick@Night followed two years later and a commission to explore the works of Louis Armstrong resulted in the 2001 recording, Dear Louis. Nicholas Payton is currently playing dates with his quintet throughout the United States and Europe.
LIONEL LOUEKE TRIO
Born in Benin, a small country in West Africa, Loueke grew up playing percussion instruments before choosing guitar at the age of 17. One of the most sought after guitarists alive today, Loueke performs internationally and has played, recorded and studied with greats like Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Sting, Santana, Mick Goodrick, John Damiam, George Garzone, Russell Ferante, Joe Diorio, Dave Holland, Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, John Scofield, Louis Nash, Wayne Shorter and others. Loueke studied music at the National Institute of Art, American School of Modern Music, Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. When he appears at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival he will have spent much of 2007 touring with the Herbie Hancock 4tet.
REBECCA KILGORE w/ PDXV JAZZ QUINTET OF PORTLAND
Rebecca Kilgore is one of America's leading song stylists and is passionate about preserving the vocal jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, an era which she feels remains unsurpassed in its high quality songwriting and heartfelt lyrics. Her mission is to learn every song from that era, and to swing in the process. With 32 recordings bearing her name, she is well on her way. Her singing has been enriched through her many associations with jazz greats including composer and pianist Dave Frishberg with whom she recorded several albums in the 1990s. Kilgore has performed at Carnegie Hall and has made frequent guest appearances on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Jim Cullum's live radio show Riverwalk: Live At The Landing as well as Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.
PDXV
Comprised of Portland's core jazzmen, PDXV has established itself as one of the city's favorite new straight-ahead ensembles, Specializing in music by the likes of Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan and the myriad of other great small jazz ensemble recordings of the mid to late 20th century, the group includes Portland veterans, trumpeter Dick Titterington, Rob Davis on saxophone and Dave Captein on bass; young gun Greg Goebel on piano and nationally renown Kansas City transplant Todd Strait on drums.
Bobby Torres
From New York City to Woodstock, ten years of touring with Tom Jones to forming his own Latin jazz group in Portland, Bobby Torres has been a stalwart figure in the music scene for over 40 years. Over the past four decades he's been around the world, performing with some of the biggest names in the business- Etta James, The Beach Boys, Yoko Ono, Dr. John, Tom Grant, Jackson Browne, Arlo Guthrie, Kenny Rogers, Joe Cocker and many others. Though his touring days are over, Torres still delights crowds as a local legend and Latin jazz master, lighting up venues throughout the Portland area.
Patrick Lamb
Originally from Mississippi, Patrick Lamb combine the classic sounds of funk, soul, R&B, jazz and his own southern roots into an infectious sound that has made him a household name in the NW. After his recent jaunt around the world playing saxophone in Bobby Caldwell's band, he has now released an acclaimed new R&B studio album as a singer and frontman called Soul of a Free Man. Lamb's music career originally took off after moving with his family to Portland. It was there that he connected with Diane Schuur touring with her for several years. Some of Lamb's other accomplishments include an acclaimed best soloist performance at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, winning three Muddy awards, being a finalist for the NW's Rockstar Mix It Up contest and performing at the White House for the holiday Congressional VIP Tours in 1996 and 1997.
