2008 Taichung Jazz Festival to Challenge Guinness Record

The 2008 Taichung Jazz Festival is scheduled to open in the central city next Saturday, with 20 to 30 well-known saxophonists and saxophone ensembles from home and abroad performing, an official said Tuesday.

The nine-day festival, which is held annually, is in its sixth year.

At the opening of the festival sponsored by the city's Cultural Affairs Bureau, 1,000 musicians are expected to team up to perform popular songs on saxophone at the bustling City Square in the city's West District, said Mark K. Huang, the bureau's director-general.

They will be attempting to break the British-based Guinness Book of World Records for the most sax players performing at once, which currently stands at 900, a record set in Toronto, Canada March 30, 2004, Huang said.
