2002 Grammy Winner Marcus Miller Scores Again
“Deliver us from Eva" allowed Miller to display his wide range of musical abilities. Being an emotional love story, Miller's music followed the progression of the relationship between Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J. From the beginning using an electronic sound to the middle where he incorporated classic soul instruments like the crying guitar, sax and electric piano, Miller's score takes you emotionally along for the ride. By the end of the movie, the score is full blown orchestral , “violins and all" to enhance the climactic emotional ending. According to Miller, “when you watch the movie, you may not even know why, but you really feel what's happening with the characters emotionally. That's what the job of the music score really is".
In the past few years, Miller has turned more of his attention to film scoring . Miller's most recent film scores include “Serving Sara" (Elizabeth Hurley) “Two Can Play That Game" (Morris Chestnut and Vivaca Fox), “The Brothers" (Morris Chestnut and D.L. Hughley), and “The Ladie'd Man" (Tim Meadows). Prior to that Miller scored such films as “Sixth Man", “Above the Rim", “Boomerang" (Eddie Murphy), and the original “ House Party" (Martin Lawrence) . Miller also wrote and produced the old school hit, “Da Butt" for Spike Lee's “School Daze" soundtrack. Miller further surprised people by composing and performing the score to E.B. White's, “ The Trumpet of the Swan". “I loved getting the opportunity to use jazz to tell a story to kids. Children have much more sophisticated ears than people give them credit for. You really don't have to play down to them. Just keep the music real", says Miller.
Marcus Miller, dubbed the “Superman of Soul" won the 2002 Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, M2, his first release on his 3 Deuces Record label.
