Volker Meitz

Berlin based pianist / keyboarder Volker Meitz is involved in several projects from Jazz to experimental or popular music. Due to his eclectic approach, Volker has always been hard to pigeon-hole to any one specific genre - but he actually likes it that way. Having started out composing chiptunes in the 8-bit computer scene, he went on to produce electronic club music incorporating jazz musicians in the 1990's, played in one of the first drum'n'bass live bands in Europe, was musical director of Sonar Kollektiv Orchester and recorded freely improvised, yet heavily processed music with Projekt Schwedt.
Today, his projects include SpaceKrautDubJazz band THE SHREDZ (w/ Eric Schaefer, John Dennis Renken, John Eckhardt), Free Imrov quartet KEMD (w/ Silke Eberhard, Almut Kühne, Yorgos Dimitriadis), SouljazzFusionStep combo GRAND COULOIR as well as duo and solo programs. Since 2018, he curates and organizes the Berlin Solo Impro music festival.

Volker played with jazz names like Taiko Saito, Kalle Kalima, Gerhard GschlößlMatthias Müller, Almut Kühne, vocalists Lisa Bassenge, Astrid North, Peter Fessler, electronic/club acts Jazzanova, Analogue Freestyle and other international artists like Ed Motta, Ann Sexton or Temptations, performing around Europe and from New York to Beijing and Johannesburg.

His sound palette embraces acoustic piano, authentic vintage keyboard setups, effects loaded synth stacks and modern laptop business.

Studio-wise, Volker has worldwide physical releases as a keyboarder, producer and remixer to his credit. For his own projects, he collaborated with musicians from Berlin Bigband and German Symphonic Orchestra as well as from Seed, Peter Fox and Jan Delay. He has also worked for Drum’N’Bass-pioneers 4 Hero (UK), NuJazzers Chari Chari (Japan) & Jazzanova, Dixon, Femi Kuti, P.Diddy, Popol Vuh, Moabitproducers Patrick Majer or The Krauts, and a soundtrack-remix for the Brazilian movie City Of God.
Volker has been appearing on radio and TV productions by major German broadcast stations.

Besides being a versatile composer and performer, his activities include production and engineering for various artists as well as sound design for film & video. Volker has always been fascinated by the technical aspect of sound synthesis and music production, as well as their interdependencies with creative application. Some respective studies eventually resulted in a master’s degree of Electro-Acoustical Engineering and Audio Communication from Berlin Technical University.
