Billy Marrows And Grande Familia: The Penelope Album Live

Read "The Penelope Album Live" reviewed by Neil Duggan

In 2024 London-based guitarist and composer Billy Marrows formed a 12-piece chamber-jazz ensemble. Together as Billy Marrows and Grande Familia, they released their debut album, Penelope (Self Produced), in memory of Marrows' mother, Penny. This deeply personal project used tunes he had written during her battle with cancer. The band featured Marrows' musical friends and relations playing in various formats: as a 12-piece ensemble, in smaller combinations and Marrows' solo guitar pieces. Matt Carmichael: Dancing With Embers

Read "Dancing With Embers" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Scottish tenor saxophonist Matt Carmichael captured attention with his first album Where Will The River Flow (Porthole Music, 2021), garnering over 8 million streams. Matt Carmichael: Where Will The River Flow

Read "Where Will The River Flow" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Unless it dries up, the river will flow to the sea. A more intriguing question might be: where will the flow take Matt Carmichael? At twenty-one, in his final year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the tenor saxophonist--a BBC Young Jazz Musician Finalist in 2020--is only starting out on his musical journey. But his assured debut as leader suggests that Carmichael will travel far. These nine originals, which draw heavily on Scottish folk traditions, herald the emergence of an ...
