Stefan Thiele

I started playing music at the early age of 8 on my first instrument, the accordeon. By the age of 15, I already played drums, trumpet and guitar as well, I started playing piano, which soon became my main instrument. When 17 years old, I got in touch with jazz through listening to Chet Baker and Oscar Peterson, and started performing in bands. In 1984 I saw Miles Davis performing live in Germany which should change my life. 2 years later I started studying music to become a professional musician. In 1988 I moved to the Netherlands to study Jazzpiano with the great dutch jazzpianists Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna. In the following years I played with almost all major dutch artists on many events and festivals all over europe. Travelling brought me in 2000 to china where I performed in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2001 I came to Indonesia for the first time, where I met and performed with Idang Rasjidi, Ireng Maulana and other great indonesian jazzmusicians. In 2006 I came back to indonesia to perform on Jakjazz, followed by performances on Javajazz in 2007.

Itmos is my latest project. It’s a collaboration with the young indonesian guitarplayer Nanda. Especially for this album we composed 8 new songs, and recorded those acoustically, only guitar and piano.
