Serena Sykes

Serena Sykes is a vocalist and bass player, living in Birchington, Kent. She currently features in Swing Noir, a Swing/Gypsy Jazz trio with Jim Knowler, (Hullabaloo, The Keytones) and Jonny Hepbir, (The Jonny Hepbir Quartet), and Seremas, with Thomas Abrahams, (Manor Manouche, The Thomas Abrahams trio). She also works freelance wherever possible. A born and bred Yorkshire girl, Serena has been involved in music since early childhood. Originally a classical pianist and oboist, she later trained as a vocalist and most recently, a bass player. In 2008, she moved to Kent, where she built a good reputation in the local scene and dedicated most of her time to her true love of music, the Swing and Jazz genres.  In the past, Serena has worked on many projects, including EDM and stage musical recordings. She has appeared on the BBC, featuring in the show ‘Songs of Praise’ amongst others, in various radio productions, and has worked in professional musical theatre shows, including venues such as the Leeds Grand Theatre, Manchester Opera House and Margate’s Winter Gardens. Serena is currently recording Swing Noir’s first album, alongside an on-going EDM project with a talented writer, Robert Burgess, and hopes to continue her career working as a freelance/session musician, writing original material and also working on new, full time project.
