Renée Yoxon

Renée Yoxon is a young vocalist and songwriter who recreates and reinterprets the traditional jazz sound with verve and poise. In only a few short years, Renée has firmly established herself as a musician dedicated to the art of jazz singing. Her latest album, Here We Go Again, has been described as having “torch song clarity with fissures of folk, blues, and Judy Garland-tinged soul.”

In 2005, while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in physics, Renée began her jazz studies with acclaimed Toronto jazz vocalist Tena Palmer. In 2009, Renée was awarded her BSc in physics, with minors in math and music. In 2010 Renée released her first album entitled Let’s Call it a Day, a minimal and intimate, jazz-inspired guitar/voice duo with veteran guitarist René Gely. This work showcases her clear and unembellished lyrical delivery, poignant song choice, and emotionally charged performance. Physical copies of Let’s Call it a Day sold out within the first year of its release. In 2011 Renée received an Astral Emerging Artist Award from the National Arts Centre and Astral Radio which helped to fund a summer in New York studying with John McNeil, Janet Lawson, Peter Eldridge, and Karen Nimereala.

In 2012 Renée co-produced an event entitled My Pal Frishberg: a night of the songs of Dave Frishberg. The work received this review from Dave Frishberg himself: “I like your treatment of my songs, I like your singing, I like your attitude, and I like your pianist.” In December of 2012, Renée released her second full length CD, Here We Go Again, an album of original music co-written by herself and pianist Mark Ferguson.

Recently Renée has relocated to Montreal where she is studying jazz at McGill University. This summer she will be releasing her third full length album, and first live album, Impossible: Live at Musideum.

“Something interesting has happened in one corner of North American popular music: the rise of a new generation of female jazz singers. … They are dynamic leaders, consummate interpreters of classic tunes, composers of original songs, fearless risk-takers and part of chamber ensembles populated by high-caliber players. …Who am I talking about? Here’s my incomplete list: Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Charenee Wade, Esperanza Spaulding, Rene Marie, Becca Stevens and Kat Edmonson. There are many others: the Canadians K.D. Lang, Sarah McLachlan, Diana Krall, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Jill Barber and Renee Yoxon; Americans Lucinda Williams, Nora Jones and Lizz Wright. And then there are the country-folk singers, who also have mastered their banjos, guitars and mandolins, such as Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz and Abigail Washburn.” – Adam Parker, The Post and Courier
