Raw Odoni
Raw Odoni are a modern jazz quartet from South London formed in 2023. They are Hu Spall (ten / sop), Matthew Shorter (piano), Dan Richards (bass) & Christian Lewcock (drums).
Since starting to perform in 2025 they’ve played gigs at Karamel, Morocco Bound, Music Room London, Hill Station Cafe, Biddle Bros and at the first Hertford Jazz Festival. Upcoming gigs include The Jago and The Post Bar and return appearances at Music Room and Hill Station, where they have a residency throughout the autumn. Their gigs have a festive and sometimes ecstatic atmosphere and draw a young and enthusiastic crowd.
Raw Odoni's music lands somewhere between spiritual jazz and post bop, with influences including Pharoah Sanders and Wayne Shorter, and from further afield, Afrobeat and avant-garde Classical. They play mainly original material, though their set also includes numbers by Bobby Hutcherson, Sam Rivers and Lee Morgan. Their sound embraces nature and the cosmos, and they’re unafraid to go to the complex corners of the musical universe that express the complexity of the human condition, but always with a raw and fresh energy.
Their band name is taken from an Ursula Le Guin novel about an anarchist planet, and a radical spirit and engagement with ideas also characterises the way they play and listen together.
