The album explores standards such as “If I Were a Bell” and “Armando’s Rhumba” along with originals that showcase the pianist’s inventive improvisation and signature sound.

Hudson’s music embraces by the sounds of rock, jazz, blues, pop, and roots music, all with a free spirited love of improvisation. Hudson works with his own trio and as a sideman for a variety of projects, and has performed at the Blue Note, Birdland, Dizzy’s at Lincoln Center, Monterey Jazz Festival, and several other clubs, theaters and festivals in the US, Canada, and overseas. Some of the musicians he has shared the stage/recorded with include Claire Daly, Steven Bernstein, Jerome Harris, Marcus McClaurine, James Zollar, Marcus Rojas, Oscar Noriega, Peter Eldridge, Jerome Jennings, and Hilliard Greene.

“Exquisite compositions…there is a quest for beauty in his lines that evoke the masters.” – Ernie Rideout, Keyboard Magazine

Background

Stephen was largely self taught, and learned the instrument by ear and by playing along with Ray Charles and Lou Rawls’ record, thanks to the encouragement and guidance of his teachers James Reed and Jim Ellington. He graduated from Skidmore College with a degree in English literature and divided his love of music with a teaching and writing career.

In his early twenties he met the pianist Barry Harris who introduced him to the world of bebop, and everything changed. Steve threw himself into the world of music and never looked back. He fell in love with an eclectic world of music which included Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal, Astor Piazzolla, James Brown, the Beatles, Ray Charles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Bach, Ravel and others. Steve went on to study with Stanley Cowell and Kenny Barron , and earn a graduate music degree from Manhattan School of Music.

Steve Hudson Chamber Ensemble: Galactic Diamonds

Read "Galactic Diamonds" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Some people favor the big statement: the bling of an over-large jewel, the blinding distraction of too many sparkly things. Pianist, composer and melodica player Steve Hudson is one of those people, and the debut recording from his Steve Hudson Chamber Ensemble, Galactic Diamonds, is a collection of little gems. The idea of a Chamber Ensemble might suggest a classical aggregation; as does ...

Steve Hudson's Outer Bridge Ensemble: Seamless

Read "Seamless" reviewed by Budd Kopman

While Steve Hudson is still the group's nominal leader, their name has evolved from the Steve Hudson Quintet on Outer Bridge (Self Published, 2005) to its current Steve Hudson's Outer Bridge Ensemble on this equally engaging sophomore release, Seamless. The total time (forty-one minutes) might be on the short side, but there is nary an extra note and you end up wanting more. The quintet has remained intact, which is saying something in these times, but with ...

Steve Hudson Quintet: Outer Bridge

Read "Outer Bridge" reviewed by Budd Kopman

Outer Bridge is the first release from the Steve Hudson Quintet. Their music is hard to categorize because, as their website says, “their original music aims to warp and fuse various styles of music--jazz, rock, Indian music, classical, funk--into something that inspires through deep grooves and searching improvisation." Hudson extends this, saying, “SHQ was created to be a vehicle for experimenting with different musical ideas. We wanted to create an ego-free environment where we could try out different concepts and ...
