The Boston Globe calls Andrei Matorin an “emerging jazz violinist” and featured him in their Critic’s Picks column twice in 2008. Born in Brazil, Matorin began playing the violin at the age of six after moving to Boston. Three years later, having spent a year studying in L’Aquila, Italy, he enrolled at the prestigious Conservatoire de Geneve in Switzerland. After studying four years in Switzerland his return to the United States prompted him to temporarily put his classical studies aside while he explored jazz. It was a world he had never been exposed to before. At fifteen, upon moving to Boston he pursued his newfound love of jazz at The New England Conservatory (NEC) Preparatory School and soon began his professional career. Andrei Matorin was the first violinist ever to graduate from NEC’s Jazz Program. He then enrolled at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship from the World Scholarship Tour to study Jazz Composition and Performance.
At Berklee, Andrei Matorin was honored with Achievement Awards in 2006 and 2008. In addition, he is an alumnus of The Betty Carter Jazz Ahead (2008) Residency Program, an exclusive program that “identifies outstanding, emerging jazz artists in their mid-teens and twenties” from an international pool of applicants.
Andrei Matorin has shared the stage with legendary and up-and-coming jazz greats including Bob Moses, Tiger Okoshi, Rosa Passos, Christian Scott, Oscar Stagnaro, Luques Curtis and Zaccai Curtis, Jason Palmer, and Richie Barshay. His career has led him to perform at renowned venues such as The Lincoln Center, John F. Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, and Regattabar.
Performing regularly between Boston and New York since the age of 15, Andrei has also been teaching privately as of his first year at Berklee. In addition he has been a Junior Faculty member at the Litchfield Jazz Camp in Connecticut since 2008.

As a Teacher
I love sharing my knowledge and passion for music with others. I find that
teaching is as beneficial for my musical development as it is for my students’.
Since attending and graduating for Berklee College of Music with a dual major
in Performance and Jazz Composition I have been selected for the Boston
Globe’s Critic’s Picks on several occasions, attended the prestigious Betty
Carter’s Jazz Ahead program in Washington, DC, performed at some of the
top jazz venues in the country with Grammy-winning and nominated artists,
and recently released my debut album “Opus” as an Armored Records
Recording Artist.
I have studied with the best jazz educators and have had the pleasure to pass
on that experience to my students at the Litchfield Jazz Camp.
Lessons
My goal is to make learning an exciting and fulfilling experience. I am in tune
with my students’ needs and goals. There is no standard curriculum. I cater
individually to students’ abilities and interests. Whether you want to sound
like Stephane Grappelli, or Jean-Luc Ponty, improvise like Coltrane or Miles
Davis, groove and solo over the blues, learn how to play the jazz standards
you have come to love, or develop your own unique voice as a composer and
improviser, I can help you reach your goals.
In order to facilitate the learning process and make it more fun, I regularly
create custom recordings for you to play along to and practice
improvisational concepts with. I am not afraid to compose exercises and
etudes that focus on your particular needs. The result is a learning
environment that is extremely conducive to fun and efficient progress.
If you live in the New York City Area, lessons are conducted in my studio in
Harlem by Columbia University. Or if you live in any other part of the World,
or would rather attend lessons from the comfort of your own home, I also
conduct lessons via webcam on Skype. Skype is a free internet calling service
that provides Web-Conferencing, Screen and File-Sharing capabilities that
allow us to conduct effective and productive lessons at long distances. It’s
extremely simple! All you need is a webcam and a high-speed Cable or DSL
internet connection. You can study with a teacher who would otherwise be
out of reach, and no longer have to brave the whether, drive through traffic,
or lug your valuable instrument around to get to your lesson.
I am currently accepting new students, but lesson slots are limited! If you are
ready to take your music to the next level, contact me today…
