801
801 was an English experimental rock supergroup formed in 1976 by guitarist Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music and keyboardist Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music. Bringing together musicians from the progressive rock, art rock, and avant-garde scenes, the band combined adventurous arrangements, electronic textures, and improvisation with an unconventional approach to familiar rock material.
The original lineup featured Manzanera and Eno alongside bassist Bill MacCormick, drummer Simon Phillips, guitarist Lloyd Watson, and keyboardist Francis Monkman. The group's name was inspired by the lyric "Eight nought one" from Eno's song "The True Wheel."
Although initially conceived as a short-lived live project, 801 made a lasting impression with 801 Live (1976), recorded at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. The album featured imaginative interpretations of songs by Eno, the Beatles, and the Kinks, alongside Manzanera's compositions. Celebrated for its exceptional sound quality and adventurous performances, the recording became a cult favorite among progressive and experimental rock enthusiasts.
Manzanera subsequently assembled a revised lineup for the studio album Listen Now (1977), extending the project's exploration of sophisticated arrangements, atmospheric electronics, and genre-crossing rock. Though 801's existence was brief, its recordings remain an intriguing document of the creative experimentation that characterized British art rock in the 1970s.
