Jack Jenney: Star Dust
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
After Hoagy Carmichael recorded his hypnotic Star Dust in October 1927 and May 1928, the song caught on and began to be cut almost monthly in studios by jazz artists such as Louis Armstrong in 1931 and Art Tatum in 1934. As a result, the sheer number of Star Dusts makes it tough to name a definitive version. Certainly Clifford Brown's with strings is up there. So is John Coltrane's, Jimmie Lunceford's, Ben Webster's and Sonny Stitt's. But perhaps my ...

Rdio and Shazam Integration Goes International, Leaves Spotify in the Dust
Source:
HypeBot
By Eliot Van Buskirk of Evolver.fm. Rdio and Shazam extended on Tuesday a joint feature in Shazam’s app that lets music fans preview and collect songs they’ve tagged from speakers into 29 new territories. This is not a trivial integration. Shazam believably claims to generate 10 percent of all digital music sales in the world, indicating that successful integration between music identification and collecting mechanisms might have a positive effect for on-demand subscriptions, which are slowly replacing downloads as the ...

Alice Russell & Tru Thoughts Records Prepare "To Dust"
Source:
Press Junkie PR
To Dust is the first solo album from British soul sensation, Alice Russell since 2008’s critically acclaimed Pot Of Gold, and marks the next step forward in her remarkable career. Whether on a big stage with her 16 piece band, charming a crowd of 4000 into staying out dancing in the rain (as she did at Montreal Jazz Festival) or rocking out an intimate club with a stripped-down six piece, Alice’s natural talent and charisma have always commanded attention and ...

Cheryl Pyle and Trio, "Soul Dust"

Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Cheryl Pyle, flautist, can be increasingly found around New York wherever free-form music is being made. Her flute has been gracing a number of sessions I have heard about. She often plays in fleet bursts and has a vibrant tone. Today we look at a recent self-released album of hers, Soul Dust. It's a trio with Cheryl on flute, doubling on electric bass, Max Ridgway playing some nice flowing guitar lines and overdubbing an interesting acoustic bass part much of ...

Master guitarist Dean Magraw presents his trio, Red Planet, in a stunning new CD, Space Dust, including many original compositions that the band has been playing live since 2003. Space Dust exemplifies the magical direction that these three experienced jazz musicians have continually created. The disc opens with the band setting fire to the Coltrane tune, Africa," travels through the Jimi Hendrix classic, Little Wing," Trane's Saturn," then six original compositions and concludes with a unique interpretation of the The ...

Space Dust from the Red Planet

JazzINK by Andrea Canter
In the midst of his battle with lymphona, Dean Magraw and his Red Planet (Chris Bates, Jay Epstein) released Space Dust (GoneJazz, 2009), filled with the trio's celestial wanderings on covers of Hendrix and Coltrane as well as compositions from Dean and Chris. I don't recall if there was a proper CD release since Dean was out of commission through 2009 and much of 2010. The reunion at the Artists Quarter this past weekend thus was a double celebration, of ...

Son Volt, "American Central Dust" (2009)

Something Else!
By NICK DERISO Introspective, but brimming with a raw-boned optimism, American Central Dust" finds a focused Jay Farrar asking questions -- and being OK when he doesn't always get them. That confidence of purpose, despite the unease of our fast-moving, recession-torn dynamic, seems to come from getting back to a stripped-down musical approach that once defined Son Volt and its leader -- both here and with his groundbreaking former alt-country band Uncle Tupelo.American Central Dust," perhaps ...

"Why are there so many unplayed pianos in the United States?" Thats the question composer and professional piano instructor Edward Weiss is asking. And its not just pianos that are taking up living room space the number of unused electronic keyboards is just as staggering. Edward Weiss has been teaching people the joy of playing piano for well over 15 years, and hes come up with his own reasons why vast numbers of these musical instruments are just gathering dust. ...
