When Finnish trumpeter and composer Eero Savela makes his album debut with Way To, he does so with a palpable pathos and an artistic vision so comprehensive and complete that it is at times dazzling. Savela—who has a long history in orchestras such as Bad Ass Brass Band, Astro Can Caravan, and The Soul Investigators—demonstrates on the six compositions of his debut album that he has a wide and multifaceted sound world at his disposal, where traditional expressions meet experimentation in a seamless and innovative flow. The influences from European jazz tradition, particularly Polish, are clearly evident in the often lyrical tone, but there is also a melodic freedom and emotional playfulness that leans toward the spiritual, almost free-jazz direction. The compositions are well-balanced, with a dreamlike, soft, and slightly melancholic atmosphere—largely due to how Savela lets Seppo Kantonen's Wurlitzer move close to the trumpet, and when it is silent, often completely dominate the soundscape. The mood is consistently floating and comfortably lounge-like, often with textured themes and rhythms that evoke a meditative and warm groove without exaggerated gestures. A particularly successful debut.
