He was 94. Born in Philadelphia in 1927, Ernie's mother sent him to live with her mother in Jeanerette, La., when he was 11. His mother and father had split up and his mother couldn’t look ...

Frank Sinatra and Ernie Freeman

Frank Sinatra and Ernie Freeman

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

As I recall growing up in Manhattan in the mid-1960s, the Beatles were only big in bedrooms. Kids listened to Fab Four 45s on their portable phonographs sitting on the floor next to their beds or heard the group on AM radios under their pillows. Outside the bedroom, in the world I encountered—the living rooms of friends' apartments, barber shops and distant open windows—what I heard most was Frank Sinatra. Albums were still an adult purchase, and even in the ...

The good news is that it's another busy week for jazz and creative music in St. Louis, including some very attractive free events. The bad news is that, absent time travel, cloning or some other fictional technology that doesn't exist, it's probably impossible for one person to hear it all. Nevertheless, to help you decide which shows are worth checking out, here are StLJN's picks for the week. Tonight, Dizzy Atmosphere plays swing and Gypsy jazz at The Shaved Duck, ...

Dexter Gordon: "Ernie's Tune"

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In the late '50s, Jack Gelber wrote a play called The Connection, which dramatized the lure of narcotics and the stark perils of addiction.
