Andrea Goretti
Andrea Goretti is a jazz pianist, improviser, and composer active in projects ranging from solo piano to orchestral ensembles, with a strong focus on original music and interdisciplinary practices (silent film, dance, photographic projections, and musical theatre). He has released two solo piano albums and one trio album, collaborating with Italian and international musicians.
Education
He graduated in Classical Piano from the Conservatory of Parma in 2013. With pianist Fabrizio Ottaviucci, he deepened his study of John Cage’s prepared piano and the music of major 20th-century composers, including Giacinto Scelsi and Morton Feldman.
He participated in the Erasmus programme, studying for one year at the Stanislawa Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk (Poland) with Prof. Waldemar Wojtal. During this period, he developed a strong interest in jazz, which led him to begin studying with Prof. Leszek Kułakowski.
Alongside his musical studies, he earned a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Parma, with a thesis in acoustics focusing on the acoustic treatment of the Church of San Ludovico in Parma in order to transform it into a concert hall.
In 2016 he obtained a Bachelor Diploma in Jazz Piano under the guidance of Alberto Tacchini, Roberto Bonati, and Roberto Dani, graduating with highest honours. His thesis focused on John Taylor. He also studied composition with Luigi Abbate and saxophone with Massimo Ferraguti.
In 2021 he obtained a Second Level Academic Diploma in Jazz Piano with full marks from the Conservatory of Milan under Prof. Umberto Petrin, with a thesis on the music of Carla Bley.
In 2023 he was selected for the prestigious annual international masterclasses of the Pordenone Silent Film Days, where he studied with leading silent film musicians such as Donald Sosin, Philip Carli, Gabriel Thibaudeau, Daan Van den Hurk, and Gunther Buchwald, performing at Teatro Verdi.
Artistic activity
In January 2021 he released his debut solo piano album A Light in the Darkness, produced by Dodicilune and featuring original compositions. He was invited by Stefano Zenni to present the work at the MetJazz Festival 2021 “The Future of Italian Jazz” (Teatro Metastasio, Prato), with a performance recorded by Rai Radio 3. The album received excellent reviews from national and specialist press (Il Manifesto, Jazzit, Gazzetta di Parma, Jazz Convention, A proposito di Jazz, Anima Jazz,..)
In September 2021 he released Unusual Trio (Emme Record Label), featuring Gabriele Fava (saxophone) and Giacomo Ganzerli (drums). The album was presented at Palazzo Te (Mantua) and at the Fara Music Festival. The track “Il Grinch 1” was selected by All About Jazz as “Song of the Day”.
