MTNLLY

MTNLLY is a Nottingham, UK based independent jazz artist whose music inhabits the space between atmosphere, introspection, and narrative. Rather than treating jazz simply as a musical language, MTNLLY approaches it as a vehicle for storytelling, using mood, texture, and composition to explore memory, emotion, solitude, and the complexities of human experience.

With a growing catalogue rooted in mood, storytelling, and emotional depth, MTNLLY represents an independent and highly personal strand of contemporary jazz.

For MTNLLY, composition becomes a means of translating psychological states into sound. Motifs and introspective arrangements are used to explore what remains after loss: the memories that refuse to disappear, the patterns of thought that accompany grief, and the tension between remembering someone and learning to live without them.

That sensibility becomes particularly pronounced in Clara, a dark and atmospheric jazz concept project inspired by the Doctor Who episode “Heaven Sent.” Drawing on the emotional arc of the Doctor's grief, the project examines mourning, memory, obsession, and the seemingly impossible act of letting go.
