Michelangelo Scandroglio

Michelangelo Scandroglio began to learn jazz with the Italian double-bass player Ares Tavolazzi and classical with Gabriele Ragghianti at I.S.S.M Luigi Boccherini in Lucca. 

He mastered his jazz studies with Joe Sanders, Harish Raghavan, Ben Street, Furio Di Castri, Aaron Parks, Ben Wendel, Miguel Zenon, Avishai Cohen, Jeff Ballard  in Siena Jazz in 2016-2019 during the International Summer Workshops.

At twenty he was awarded at the Riga International Jazz Bass Competition, where he won also an official invitation by Adam Yuang Hong to play at Beijing Jazz Festival.

​In 2018 he received the prestigious award Tomorrow’s Jazz by Veneto Jazz as one of the best  young talents in Italy.

In 2019 he  was awarded by Paolo Fresu and a jury composed by the most recognizable Italian jazz journalist with the first prize of the Umbria Jazz Competition.

​In 2020 he was selected for “AIR”, organized and financed by the Italian Jazz Association (MIDJ) and MIBACT (Italian Ministery of Culture Activity ) , a program which consisted in a one month artistic residency in Lima ( Perù) . 

In the same year he released “In the Eyes of the Whale” his first album as a leader  on Auand Records, with Alessandro Lanzoni on piano, Peter Wilson on guitar , Bernardo Guerra on drums , Hermon Mehari on trumpet , Michele Tino on sax and as a very special guest the international jazz star Logan Richardson.

This album allowed him to win the “Nuova generazione”, a program financed  and promoted by MiBACT and I-JAZZ ,  which developed his career by organize a tour in all the major festivals in Europe and around the world.

In January 2021 he was ranked as one of the best  Italian Jazz talent of the year for Musica Jazz. In the same year he won the Getxo International Jazz Competition in Spain and he was awarded with the PREMIO SIAE for his quality as a composer. 

In that year ,thanks to the collaboration between Taller de Musics of Barcelona and the Grey Cat Jazz Festival, he became an active member and co-leader of the group “Barencia”. Along with the pianist Xavi Torres Vicente, the drummer Bernardo Guerra and the bailora Karen Lugo, the project performed in some of the best clubs and festivals in Europe including Canarias Jazz, Barcelona Jazz Festival, BMC Opus Jazz Club, Bimhuis, Unterfarth Jazz Club and made a tour in South-Korea including a performance at the Jarasum Jazz Festival.

In 2022 he was selected for the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead at Kennedy Center in Washington D.C as the only one European jazz musician.
