Kyle Green

Kyle Green is an American jazz guitarist, composer, and educator based in Portugal. Through his work as a performer, conductor, festival founder, and arts leader, he has built an international career dedicated to performance, music education, and the advancement of jazz culture.

Green received his formal musical education at Grand Valley State University in Michigan and The City University of New York, where he studied while simultaneously building a career as a guitar instructor. His playing draws from the post-bop tradition, balancing expressive improvisation with a strong commitment to melody, interaction, and swing.

Among Green's recordings, Paying Dues (2025) represents his most ambitious project to date and the debut release of the Kyle Green Quintet. The recording features an international ensemble comprising drummer Michael Lauren (USA), organist Liévin Lefebvre (France), saxophonist César Cardoso (Portugal), and trumpeter Ricardo Formoso (Spain). Recorded at OJM Studios in Matosinhos, Portugal, Paying Dues showcases Green's original compositions, blending lyrical melodies, modern post-bop, and spontaneous ensemble interaction.

Based in Portugal, Green has become an active advocate for jazz through performance, education, and cultural leadership. He is the President and Co-Founder of Jazz Within, a cultural association dedicated to promoting jazz through performance, education, and community engagement. He is also the founder and artistic director of Festival Tomar Jazz, an annual festival that has helped establish Tomar as a destination for jazz in central Portugal by bringing together internationally recognized artists, Portuguese musicians, and audiences from across the region.

Green also serves as Music Director of Orquestra Jazz Tomar, directing the ensemble's performances and educational initiatives while creating opportunities for collaboration between professional musicians and emerging artists.

Education has remained a defining thread throughout Green's career. Having begun teaching before completing his university studies, he has spent more than two decades working with thousands of students through private instruction and educational organizations including NYC Guitar School and Midori & Friends in New York City. He has also presented masterclasses and educational programs in both the United States and Portugal, including at Muskegon Community College (Michigan), Canto Firme (Tomar, Portugal), and the Sociedade Filarmónica Gualdim Pais (Tomar, Portugal). His teaching philosophy emphasizes musicianship, creativity, and the systematic development of practical skills, reflecting his belief that jazz is both an artistic tradition and a lifelong process of learning.

Whether performing, conducting, teaching, or leading cultural initiatives, Green is committed to preserving the jazz tradition while creating opportunities for future generations of musicians and audiences to engage with the music.
