Kinva

"Kinva" in Ukrainian means a traditional wooden mug-like vessel, used both for storing and consuming liquids. The band Kinva is such a vessel: they preserve traditional ethnic Ukrainian melodies ivn order to serve them in a fresh, jazz form.

Beautiful melodies full of melancholy and longing for the homeland, this is what KINVA's 2023 debut album sounds like. The Ukrainian trio was formed in Poland right after Russia invaded Ukraine. A couple of musicians – pianist Anastasija Litvinyuk and drummer Igor Hnydyn (creators of ethno-jazz group ChockolaD) formed a trio with a Polish musician with Ukrainian roots, Roman Chraniuk. To create the album Kinva they used and arranged traditional Ukrainian melodies as well as original compositions of Igor and Anastasija. They created an album with a jazz core, rich and thrilling melodies, sometimes based on irregular meters. It is an emotional journey into the depths of Ukrainian culture and the memory of a lost country. A wonderful testimony for a difficult time.
