Bruce Hornsby: 'Flicted

Read "'Flicted" reviewed by Geno Thackara

After two straight albums made by basically throwing every dang thing at the wall just to see what would happen, it turns out Bruce Hornsby still has one more in the grab bag. He began Absolute Zero (Zappo, 2019) and Non-Secure Connection (Zappo, 2020) without any particular theme, just taking musical bits and bobs he'd produced for Spike Lee films and letting each one wander into its own space. Again packed with weird turns and fun surprises, 'Flicted rounds out ...

Bruce Hornsby: Non-Secure Connection

Read "Non-Secure Connection" reviewed by Geno Thackara

It's hard to imagine Bruce Hornsby's listeners being fazed much by anything he does anymore. Harmonic layers of semi-processed voice drones in an ambient haze? Classy strings crossed with jarringly angular piano and over-jokey lyrics about internet girls? After a career that's touched on jazz and bluegrass as prominently as folk and classical, his familiar crowd knows how to take it all in stride. He could attempt perhaps the most smoove-jiving half-sincere-half-parody R&B pastiche ever, and hardly anyone would bat ...

René Thomas: Rare and New

René Thomas: Rare and New

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Born in Liège, Belgium, guitarist René Thomas moved to Paris in the early 1950s and became part of the active jazz scene there. Paris back then was similar to 52nd Street in New York, where musicians could engage in steady gigging with leading musicians from Europe and from America. What most of the European jazz musicians in Paris had in common was a pronounced sense of melody, swing and beauty. Thomas had a way of picking that was instantly engaging. ...

Not too many male singers have a high C6, well at least not to be heard in public, but G. Thomas Allen's stratospheric range and pleasantly smooth tone is the next wave of sound in the modern jazz space. Native of Danville, VA, by way of Chicago, where he is currently based and accessible to the jazz scene; whether it's jamming at Andy's Jazz Club or sitting in at The Green Mill with the trumpeter Pharez Whitted or saxophonist Eric ...

For some strange reason yesterday, I had a craving for guitarist René Thomas. I love the way he swings unevenly and the hip quality of his picking and sound of his guitar. Born in Belgium in 1927, Thomas moved to Paris and was deeply influenced by guitarist Jimmy Raney. In the 1960s, he often was featured as part of a trio with organist Eddy Louiss and Kenny Clarke. René Thomas died in 1975. Here are seven Thomas video and audio ...

How Thomas Newman’s Score For “American Beauty” Flipped The Script On Film Music

Source: HypeBot

With its 20th anniversary in sight, Sam Mendes' film American Beauty has received its share of both critical acclaim and controversy, but it is perhaps less often remembered for its groundbreaking and game-changing score. Guest post by Alex Wilson of Soundfly's Flypaper 2019 will be the 20th anniversary of Sam Mendes’ critically acclaimed and controversial film American Beauty. Anyone who saw it back in 1999 will remember the way the storytelling captured one’s imagination with a very intellectual sort of seduction. American Beauty was and still ...
