Josep-Manel Vega
He began studying musical language and harmony with his grandfather (Josep Baiget), classical guitar with several teachers (Jordi Belza, Mariano Capella, Guillem Pérez-Quer, William Waters, Danielle Kassner), contemporary music (Joan Munné, Xavier Prats) and flamenco (Manuel Castilla). However, it was by exploring on his own that he developed a personal musical language focused on improvisation, inspired by musicians such as Keith Jarret, Bill Frisell, Ralph Towner or Nguyên Lê.
ON A TIGHTROPE (2022 and beyond)
A project that, from an open and integrating conception of what jazz can mean, brings together a rich background of elements from classical music, flamenco, modal jazz and the so-called drone music (built on one single chord) common to Celtic music, Gregorian chant, medieval music and the ragas of Indian music.
ON A TIGHTROPE faces in each concert the challenge of being always creating new music in real time. Music conceived to be developed both as a soloist and supported by a solid rhythm section.
UNFINISHED LANDSCAPE (2021 and beyond)
Collaboration with Swiss singer and harpist Mia Ramer. Songs conceived to be developed through inspired improvisations which transform them into images beyond the music.
Playing live UNFINISHED LANDSCAPE becomes a small collection of instantly created atmospheres that turn each concert into a unique event. An experience that has been immortalised with the release of five tracks on a first album with the same title.
IMPROVISING AROUND THE WORLD (2018 and beyond)
More than two years of a deep personal transformation as a musician and as a human being, following a journey with no fixed direction. A project built slowly, from one country to another, playing in different places in search of different sources of energy, feelings and inspiration.
Now each live concert is an improvisation built from the same musical elements that were used in each place. These elements work as words that weave a discourse in real time. Each new improvisation evokes previous improvisations and transports us to the many spaces trodden.
