Joel Zelnik — Live At Steinway Piano Gallery ... CD
Think (Japan), 2010. New Copy .... $16.99 24.99
A great recent recording from pianist Joel Zelnik – the player who's probably best remembered for his rare 60s session Move! Joel still sounds great here – working in tight trio formation with a groove that's openly lyrical, and nicely swinging – lots of those forward-thinking moments we remember from before, but with a new sort of sensitivity that's mighty nice – more than enough to get him ranked right up there with some of the better-known aging piano talents of his generation recording today – like Steve Kuhn or Denny Zeitlin! Titles include "Dream Dancing", "Turn Out The Stars", "The Opener", "Old/New Waltz", "You've Changed", and "How Deep Is The Ocean".

Joel Zelnik — Move (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Felicia/DIW (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $19.99
A rare jazz nugget from the late 60s – a pretty great trio set by the Joel Zelnik Trio – an American combo, but one with a groove that's every bit as hip as some of the best European piano groups of the time! Zelnik plays the lead instrument, but the album's definitely a strong three-sided affair – with the participation of bass and drums as important to the overall groove as you'd get on some of the best bossa trio sessions of the 60s! In fact, there also seems to be some of the best Brazilian trio dynamism going on here – even though the sound is strongly American overall – and other group members include Harold Slapin on bass and Dave Rose on drums and arrangements. Titles include "Maybe September", "Tune Up", "Cultivation", "Move", "Walk Right In", "Blues Web", and "Minor Thought".
