Art Blakey: Flight to Tokyo

Art Blakey: Flight to Tokyo

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In January 1961, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers were on their first tour of Japan. That year, the Messengers consisted of a tough bunch of signature players—Lee Morgan (tp), Wayne Shorter (ts), Bobby Timmons (p), Jymie Merritt (b) and Blakey (d). This particular line-up of Messengers had been together since early 1960, when they recorded The Big Beat for Blue Note. The fact that Blakey was able to assemble and unify so much jazz firepower was a testament to ...

Duke Jordan: Flight to Jordan

Duke Jordan: Flight to Jordan

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Yesterday, I posted on pianist Duke Jordan's first trio leadership session, in 1954. Today, I want to share one of his finest albums, Flight to Jordan, his first and only Blue Note release. The album is solid for several reasons: the group is tight and in the groove; all of the tracks, except I Should Care, were originals by Jordan; and the distinct instrumental personality of each individual member came together to create a gorgeous sound. Recorded in August 1960 ...

Taking Flight Again: Twitter Is Making A Comeback

Taking Flight Again: Twitter Is Making A Comeback

Source: HypeBot

Guest post by Bobby Owsinski from Music 3.0 For a while it looked like Twitter would eventually become a casualty of the social media wars, as its user base had plateaued and it continued to lose money. That now looks to be in the past as Twitter has just posted its second ...

Pops in Full Flight

Critical carping and misguided stylistic arguments aside, in every period of his career Louis Armstrong was formidable in his playing and singing. His appearance with the All-Stars at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival reminded many who had taken Armstrong for granted of the power of his art. Through Bert Stern's and Aram Avakian's film Jazz On A Summer's Day, his performance that night has reached untold thousands of listeners miles and years beyond the concert in Freebody Park.

Bosch's Ear Tunneling Debut a 13 Track Warp Speed Flight

Source: Glass Onyon PR - William James

Algonquin, IL - Over the course of 48 hours in the studio, Bosch members Christopher Brown, Charles Greenleaf and Kevin Sims created their thirteen track, eponymously titled first release, Bosch. Planning was utterly simple: Sims arrived via car from Athens, Georgia with a carload of instruments, Greenleaf arrived via plane from Athens, and Brown, proprietor of northern Illinois' Studio Roadnoise, set up a mix template to accommodate their many instruments.
