Florian Ross Octet: Tunes & Explorations
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
I love jazz octets. More than any other ensemble configuration, an octet shows off an arranger's stuff. Unlike a big band, an octet is fully exposed, with individual instruments coming and going rather than full sections broken into chords. In many ways, octets are little big bands—the skeletal version. As a listener, you get to hear the busy shifts of a chart more vividly than a big band's brass and horn sections. Because they're exposed, octet arrangements either sound great ...

San Francisco Bay Area Guitarist/Composer George Cotsirilos Deepens His Explorations With New Quartet Date 'Refuge,' Due May 20 On Oa2 Records
Source:
Terri Hinte Publicity
George Cotsirilos pushes into new frontiers with the May 20 release of Refuge (OA2). The guitarist and composer’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2018 album Mostly in Blue again features his quartet—pianist Keith Saunders, bassist Robb Fisher, and drummer Ron Marabuto—but repositions them both in pursuit of new challenges and, if anything, even more “in blue.” Cotsirilos added piano to his longtime trio in 2018, hoping to express the denser harmonies he was hearing in his writing. The success of the ...

Benjamin Boone takes his fascination with the merger of poetry and jazz to stunning new heights on The Poets Are Gathering, set for an October 16 release on Origin Records. True to its title, the album finds the saxophonist-composer assembling a large group of acclaimed American poets—11 in all, including Tyehimba Jess (Pulitzer Prize), Patricia Smith (LA Times Book Award/National Slam Poetry Champion), Juan Felipe Herrera (U.S. Poet Laureate), and Edward Hirsch (MacArthur)—intertwining their work with that of 20 musicians, ...

This is the preface for Divergent Streams, a collection of essays edited by Kyle Bylin (@sidewinderfm) and written by influential executives, startup founders, and thinkers in the music industry. Download a free copy of the e-book here. I wanted something to read. Something that challenged me. Something that engaged me. Something that forced me to sit down and consider the writer's perspective. What I found instead were news stories about trivial developments, blog posts with big headlines but small insights, and numbered ...

Chick Corea/ Eddie Gomez/ Paul Motian - Further Explorations (2012)
Source:
Something Else!
It's yet another tribute to the singular artistry of Bill Evans, but this one has a special plot line: the drummer played for Evans in one era and the bassist played for him in another era. While the pianist, naturally, was never a part of an Evans ensemble, he has over several decades built a wide-ranging oeuvre that contained many brilliant moments, all while arguably attaining the stature of Evans. Further Explorations is a sprawling, career-spanning retrospective of music composed ...
