Wes Montgomery Live in Europe, 1965

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Fortunately for us, guitarist Wes Montgomery went over to Europe in the spring of 1965 and toured. We're lucky, because Montgomery wound up on European TV shows during many of his stops, resulting in lots of video clips. Yesterday, I decided to string together all the live 1965 dates I could find on YouTube, giving you an opportunity to hear and see him on the road. Here's Montgomery on tour in Europe in March, April and May 1965. Here's Montgomery ...

Szczecin Jazz: Europe's First Hybrid Festival Off 2021

Source: Andrew M. Read

It is a strange feeling to write a piece about a jazz festival while the first band is on stage. I can hear Belmondo Quintet enchant their in-person audience from where I'm sitting, backstage in the production office of the Szczecin Opera Theater, where Europe's first international jazz festival of 2021 has just kicked off. From February 25 through March 4, Szczecin Jazz Festival hosts a lineup of international artists including Belmondo Quintet, Alexander Beets Quintet ft. Ellister van der ...

Doc: Ben Webster in Europe

Doc: Ben Webster in Europe

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In this 31-minute documentary of Ben Webster in Europe in 1967, there are whimsical moments and moments of great artistry. In '67, Webster moved to Amsterdam for a year, where director Johan van der Keuken captured him on film between March and June. It's a vastly humanistic mid-length portrait that showcases Webster's sense of humor and his enormous skill on the tenor saxophone. A special thanks to Gerard Sikma in Rotterdam for sending along the link. For more on the ...

In the spring of 1972, the Count Basie Orchestra was touring in Europe. Two concerts were filmed, possibly for TV, and are up as one at YouTube. The first took place in Denmark. As best I can tell, the band featured Paul Cohen, Sonny Cohn, George Minger and Waymon Reed (tp); Al Grey, Mel Wanzo, Bill Hughes and John Watson, Sr. (tb); Eric Dixon (fl,ts); Curtis Peagler and Bobby Plater (as); Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis (ts); John C. Dean Brown Band To Tour Europe Fall 2016

Dean Brown Band To Tour Europe Fall 2016

Source: Dean Brown

Guitarist and composer Dean Brown has always done things his way. Nowhere is that in greater evidence than on ROLAJAFUFU, his fifth album as a leader. The title is a playful acronym that encompasses rock-Latin-jazz-funk- fusion, the universes Brown explores on this diverse, kinetic recording. Brown’s fiercely independent streak is also exemplified by the fact that this album was funded by his denizens of fans worldwide via PledgeMusic. It’s Brown’s first self-released album, after four celebrated previous discs on the ...
