Edward Lewis

There are three relatively well known Ed Lewis trumpeters, but this Eddie Lewis is probably the least well known of them all. He never played with Count Basie. He isn't the Ed Lewis who performs with symphony orchestras. This Eddie Lewis is a humble son of a military family who grew up on army bases across the world. When his father retired from the army, his family settled in the city where he was born, El Paso, Texas. Even though his cultural roots are Pennsylvania Dutch, and he hasn't lived there since the 80's, he still refers to El Paso as his hometown. This is most true for his life as a jazz musician because that's where it all began for him.

Eddie Lewis has been playing jazz trumpet since he signed up for jazz ensemble at Andress High School, under the direction of Al Mendez. Eddie soon began hitting jazz jam sessions where he was mentored by El Paso's top jazz musicians: Ricky Malichi, Gerald Hunter, Curt Warren, Mike Frances, and Mike Duva. As a student, Eddie toured Europe three times and performed in the Montreaux Jazz Festival twice.

Today, Eddie is one of the top jazz trumpet players in Houston, Texas. He remains active as a performer, educator and composer/arranger and hasn't had a day job since he quit delivering pizzas for Diminos in 1988. Eddie teaches private lessons at his home studio, does arranging work for local bands, self publishes his books and compositions, and performs music from a variety of styles. Basically, he is living more than his share of the dream.
