David "Davey" Masteller

Hailed as an inspirational artist by many, Davey Masteller has earned a reputation as a talented musician and skillful performer. Coming from the Low Country’s First Family of Jazz, Davey has become a powerful and well-known force in the Jazz world as well as the Rock and Pop genres of Music. He has been involved with a number of different Jazz groups, a variety of original bands, and has played behind several great singer/songwriters throughout his career. Davey can be described as a Jazzer with the heart of a Rocker. This proves to be very evident in the intensity, passion, and energy that comes through in his playing no matter what style of music he is performing. When he gets lost in his music he really shines as his true self. For years Davey has held a weekly house gig known as "Fat Tuesdays" with his New Orleans Quintet at the world famous Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, SC. For a long time Tuesdays at The Jazz Corner were nights that Davey and his father Bob Masteller could be seen regularly sharing the stage. After the passing of his father, Davey decided to keep going with his regular night and turn it into a tribute to him by celebrating New Orleans Music which was his favorite style of Jazz to listen to and play. Since being established in1999 by Davey’s legendary father, the Jazz Corner has since become one of Downbeat Magazine’s "Top Jazz Rooms in the World", the twelfth ranked music venue in the US by “Yelp”, and the second best all-around restaurant in South Carolina rated by “Only In Your State”. The Jazz Corner has also consistently held the number one spot on Trip Advisor in Hilton Head for several years running. Davey has gone on to carry the legacy left behind as a family face, a major talent, and a jazz club owner while keeping his own musical roots and passions going strong. He also continues working on the philanthropic outreach program branched from The Jazz Corner called The Junior Jazz Foundation. This was an organization also founded by Davey's father with a mission to keep music programs thriving in schools, and assist young musicians with financial help and scholarships. Since a very young age, Davey has always found great joy and satisfaction in playing and making music. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business from The State of New York University, and an Audio Engineering Degree from The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Phoenix, Arizona. Davey wrapped up his B.A. Degree by working at the Verve/Universal Jazz record label as an A&R Intern in New York City in 2003. In everything from live shows to songwriting and studio sessions, Davey continues to touch fans around the world with his distinct and enjoyable varied musical styles.

Perfection: David Allyn - Love Is a Serious Thing (1962)

Perfection: David Allyn - Love Is a Serious Thing (1962)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Frank Sinatra had a soft spot for singer David Allyn. His affection and help in Las Vegas wasn't based on pity. David had suffered psychologically during his service in World War II and went to prison for eight years on drug charges after attempts to self-medicate led to addiction. Sinatra admired Allyn because he was a superb emotional jazz balladeer who also could swing. But they shared more. Both singers had major professional turning points at virtually the same time—in ...
