I Am Three: In Other Words

Read "In Other Words" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Adventurous listeners who have been following the separate journeys of saxophonist Silke Eberhard, trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser and drummer Christian Marien have reason to rejoice whenever their paths converge, as they do once again in their trio I Am Three. Originally conceived as a Charles Mingus tribute project on its debut, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus (Leo Records, 2016), and a follow-up with vocalist Maggie Nicols on Mingus' Sounds of Love (Leo Records, 2019), I Am Three still retains a faint connection to ...

Christian Marien Quartett: How Long Is Now

Read "How Long Is Now" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Drummer Christian Marien represents the kind of omnivorous musical sensibility that is so valuable in an age in which conventional musical categories seem increasingly irrelevant. His undeniable reverence for the jazz tradition is evident through his work with I Am Three, in which he has teamed with saxophonist Silke Eberhard and trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser to offer marvelous re-interpretations of Charles Mingus, both on Mingus, Mingus, Mingus (Leo Records, 2016) and, joined by vocalist Maggie Nicols, Mingus' Sounds of Love (Leo ...

Andreas Willers 7 of 8: The Goldman Variations

Read "The Goldman Variations" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

„He is a jack-of-all-trades in many rhythmic alleys of the jazz district and its advanced, improvisation-savvy neighborhood. With a remarkable creative reservoir that also marks him out as one of the busiest players in Berlin’s improv scene, and with an equally remarkable international reach, he is batting his way through musical ground plans.“   Hannes Schweiger, freiStil No 104, Nov/Dec 2022
