Global Music Award – 2-Time Bronze Medal Winner 2016
Life Is But A Groove
Guitarist Charlie Wood was named winner of two Bronze Medals from Global Music Awards in 2016 for two of his songs: “East Meets West” (WaterColours CD) & “Rhythms of the Eclipse” (Rhythms of the Eclipse CD). This prestigious award is given for professionalism, creativity, listener impact, technical quality, uniqueness, & styling. It was an honor to be considered by this organization & the contributions it has made to the music industry.
Rare & pure of heart best describes the music of this Texas-based contemporary jazz guitarist, but Wood is not by any means a newcomer to the music scene. Born in San Antonio & raised in the small town of Bulverde, Texas, Charlie was playing banjo at the age of 7. Charlie formed an interest in the guitar at the age of 9, & began taking lessons from jazz guitarist, Dow Daggett, at age 11. When he was 14 years old, Charlie began playing various types of music professionally from Rock ‘n’ Roll, R&B, Blues, & Country. Charlie played with many of Country’s finest musicians including Johnny Gimble & other Country megastars performing at Gilley’s. Charlie was also in the house & road band with Gilley for three & half years.
Getting his “feet” wet in all genres of music, he found his true love is in Jazz. When Contemporary Jazz hit the music scene Charlie knew he had found his niche. His love of Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins & other guitar greats deeply influenced him and he developed his own style & techniques that make his guitar playing a memorable experience for the listener.
Wood’s first Contemporary Jazz CD, In the Thick of the Woods, was considered for a Grammy in 1996 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. On his second release, Rhythms of the Eclipse he received great reviews from noted jazz critics: “Charlie’s music is sound that fuses smooth jazz, straight-up jazz, Latin, funk & ballads. He plays his music with soul, class & imagination” wrote Jim Beal, Night Lights columnist for Express-News.” This CD revealed much about Charlie’s inner creativity. Persistence & determination resulted in Wood opening for such acts as Boney James, SpyroGyra, Stanley Jordan, Kenny Garrett, George Howard, Gerald Albright, Walter Beasley, Everett Harp, Brian Culbertson, Fattburger, & Chuck Loeb.
His last CD, WaterColours breathes with the life of Charlie’s heart & soul, reflecting his belief in mankind Living in Unity as one man, one heart, & one soul. Kim Stone stated that this CD is, in his opinion, the best one so far & it was considered for a Grammy in 7 categories, including Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Anthony Brown, PhD., Director of Asian American Orchestra stated, “This new CD exhibits an exciting creativity & allows Charlie to venture into new territory. With the release of WaterColours, San Antonio-based guitarist Charlie Wood documents his current direction in shaping the repertoire of jazz guitar. A truly gifted composer/musician, Wood’s music employs a wide range of guitaristic colors, textures & effects that are refreshingly orchestral, with a momentum & sweep that incorporates a variety of influences, both obvious & nuanced." As with his previous release, Rhythms of the Eclipse (2003, Third Stream Productions), Kim Stone, bassist with SpyroGyra & The Rippingtons.

Charlie Wood: Lucky

Memphis has long been a hotbed of music. It was there that an unknown blues singer named Riley King would later become the biggest name in the genre: B.B. King. The city has also been home to Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas and The King: Elvis Presley. A more recent product of the city on the river is Charlie Wood, a vocalist and organist who plays old-school blues. Wood spent time ...
