Backgrounder: Brother Jack's 'Heatin' System"

Between 1968 and 1974, organist Brother Jack McDuff recorded seven albums for Chicago's Cadet label. One of the most interesting of the bunch was The Heatin' System. What made the 1972 double album special was its hip Chicago soul-jazz flavor and the band behind him: Bobby Alston (tp), Don Myrick and David Young (ts,fl), Brother Jack McDuff (org,p,melodica), Marty Roberts (g), Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones (b) on different tracks, Greg Williams (d) and Frederick Derf" Walker (cga). Rather than ...

Guitarist Kenny Burrell recorded four albums with organist Brother Jack McDuff in late 1962 and '63. The one I'm sharing with you today is Crash!, the last of the bunch that was recorded by Burrell for Prestige in February 1963. It featured Burrell with Harold Vick (ts), Brother Jack McDuff (org), Joe Dukes (d) and Ray Barretto (cga). The album has a great soul groove, and Burrell and McDuff played off each other well, with Vick's tough tenor rolling through ...

Interview: 'Ronnie Singer Was My Brother'

Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
At the end of September, I posted on guitarist Jimmy Gourley. In that post I wrote about Gourley's friend, a Chicago guitarist named Ronnie Singer. According to those who heard Singer, he was on par with Jimmy Raney. Whether that's true or not is beside the point. Let's just say Singer was exceptional. Born June 9, 1928, Singer played bebop in Chicago in the late-1940s. Singer, like a significant number of jazz musicians at the time, was addicted to heroin. ...

Gene Ammons: Brother Jug!

The jazz-rock fusion movement of the late 1960s and '70s elevated electronic instruments, particularly the guitar and keyboards. But while the rock guitar, Fender Rhodes electric piano and synthesizers were front and center in many fusion bands, the saxophone experienced a rebirth in the parallel soul-jazz movement. Sidelined as a solo rock instrument since the rise of the electric guitar in the mid-'50s, the saxophone was once again featured prominently raised its visibility by covering hit songs of soul vocalists. ...

Brother Jack Meets the Boss

Source:

If organists were vehicles, Brother Jack McDuff's sound would be one of those oversized off-road trucks with huge tires. His attack on the Hammond was massive and rock solid, laying down a double-thick bass line and meaty chords. McDuff came on the scene in the late 1950s, when establishments along the Midwest club circuit hired jazz-soul organists to replace more expensive ensembles. The organ, with its big-band feel, was a natural to pair with a saxophone, which is how McDuff ...

Though veteran guitarist Thom Douvan currently splits his time between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, his heart is still deeply imbedded in the Motor City, where he gained invaluable bandstand experience during the ‘80s with a group of former Motown session men collectively known as The Funk Brothers. Those funk and soul-jazz roots run deep with the Ann Arbor native and come to the surface on his second release as a leader, Brother Brother—an outing dedicated to Funk Brothers ...

Featuring Guitarist Gilad HekselmanThe journey from adolescence to adulthood can be a harrowing one. For composer and saxophonist Joshua Kwassman, that was true in a very literal sense, as a three-day bike trip, in August 2010, with an idolized childhood friend collapsed into chaos and shattered his youthful illusions. While that trek itself found Kwassman growing up in a hurry, his musical recounting of the experience marks the debut of a remarkably mature young composer. Songs of the Brother Spirit, ...
