Axel Filip

Axel Filip is a highly accomplished Argentine drummer, composer, improviser and arranger currently based in Berlin. He is known for his versatility and ability to perform within a wide range of musical genres, from jazz and popular music to Argentine folk music, avant-garde, free and conducted improvisation.

As a composer, Axel explores the relationship between jazz, improvisation, poetry and folklore music, creating soundscapes that evoke complex yet visceral emotions. He has a keen interest in nurturing his artistic practice and developing a unique sound and language of his own.

In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Axel is also an accomplished arranger. In 2018, he won a grant from the National Arts Foundation for a project that focused on researching, collecting, arranging, and recording music written by Argentine music composers. This project served to expand a repertoire of Argentine music arranged and reinterpreted under the perspective of jazz music, with a particular focus on using each piece as a platform for improvisation.

Axel received his bachelor's degree in jazz music from the Conservatorio Superior de Musica Manuel de Falla in Buenos Aires and is currently completing his master's studies at the NTNU Music Department (Trondheim), Rhythmic Music Conservatory (Copenhaguen) and the Jazz Institute Berlin as part of the European Jazz Master program.

As a bandleader, Axel has released  “El equilibrio secreto de las cosas” (ears&eyes Records 2019), “Sesión Efénea” (Club del disco 2020), and “Sendero” (ears&eyes records 2021). His current project, MALEZA, features an international group comprising Mirna Bogdanović on vocals, Mathilde Vendramin on cello, Joakim Rainer Petersen on piano and Lisa Hoppe on bass with which will release a new album on 2023.

Camilia Nebbia: Colibri Rojo

Read "Colibri Rojo" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Tutored by none other than Marilyn Crispell and Tim Berne, young pioneering saxophonist Camila Nebbia cannot be held totally responsible for her flexible idiosyncrasies. Surely both elders must have mentioned their ideas of musical reflexiveness somewhere in the laboratory. Sketchy, skittish, lean and peerless, Nebbia rarely takes the chance to sweeten the pot. Instead she likes to stir, season, burn and bake whenever and whatever the musical moment presents. And they occur as often and as spontaneously on ...

Camila Nebbia: Aura

Read "Aura" reviewed by John Chacona

No one knows what the landscape for live jazz will look like in the near future, but it is fair to assume that jny: New York and jny: London will continue as centers of gravity with jny: Johannesburg making a strong challenge. Here is a long-shot bet: don't sleep on jny: Buenos Aires. If your idea of Argentine jazz is limited to tango or Gato Barbieri, prepare to be startled at what Camila Nebbia and her nonet of young players ...

"With the drummer Axel Filip , already present on the very beautiful Aura, we make another discovery, surprising ourselves that this former student of Ben Goldberg and Marilyn Crispell has passed under the radar for so long" Franpi Barreaux (Citizen Jazz)
