Alice Zawadzki

Loosely connected to the jazz world but realistically inhabiting her own realm,

Alice Zawadzki is a vocalist, violinist, songwriter and composer based in London, with considerable repute as “a genuine original” (The Guardian), and a distinctive and individual presence on the creative European music scene.

Alice’s rich musical background and “whimsical hyper-creativity” (MOJO Magazine) create a sound which draws upon her early exposure to New Orleans jazz and gospel with the legendary Lillian Boutté who took Alice under her wing and on tour as a teenager, an extensive classical training as a violinist, and a continuous exploration of improvisation, poetry, and folk music from diverse traditions, “all propelled in a voice of velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional power” (The Arts Desk).

Alice's long-awaited third studio album Za Górami, will be released by the iconic ECM Records in September 2024, and sees her at work with two long-term collaborators, pianist Fred Thomas, and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado. Inhabiting their own stylistic realm which encompasses Mediterranean folk song, chamber music, improvisation, and the world of acoustic jazz, the clear empathy and synergy harnessed by these three musicians is the result of almost a decade’s work together. Their music is guided by a special emphasis on intimacy, delicacy of sound and space, and subtle interaction - qualities which led them to ECM Records, whose founder Manfred Eicher produced the album in Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo in June 2023.

Alice, Fred and Misha describe the album as being “collected on our travels and taught to us by our friends, these are songs we have learnt and loved together. Though our musical and cultural backgrounds encompass Europe, Russia and South America, we were all three born in England. This happenstance was the product of love, war, exile, the arbitrariness of borders and the yearning for a new life - all themes which are themselves woven through the narratives you’ll hear within. Gathered from Argentina, France, Venezuela, Poland and the deep well of Sephardic song, these folk tales speak to the moon, the mountains, the rain, the madness of humans and the prophecies of birds.”

2023 opened with Alice's bewitching new piece, Bag Of Bones, commissioned by the cutting-edge Manchester Collective - a deeply personal piece of music-theatre that weaves Eastern European folklore with psychology, ceremony, and ritual, and which marks a new chapter in Alice's work. Her UK tour performances with the collective were hailed by The Guardian newspaper as "a haunting meditation on family and freedom", and "a perfect marriage of music and theatre".  With performances across a range of locations, from concert halls and theatres to grassroots venues and nightclubs, the Southbank Centre proclaimed Bag of Bones as "a breathtaking new work... a stunning production". The Cusp Magazine continued; "Bag of Bones is primal precision... Alice Zawadzki’s creation, a warped and dramatic song cycle... revels in the basest of urges in a deeply considered way. Her parade of characters, varied and yet each as obsessive as the last, haunt the stage in turn and draw every ounce of attention the room has at its disposal."
