Al Gafa

Guitarist Al Gafa rose to prominence in the mid to late 60s as a session player. From 1969 to 1971, he became vocalist Carmen McRae’s musical director and then later joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band throughout the 70s. Since then, he’s led a series of small bop groups and has performed or recorded with a virtual who’s who of jazz luminaries including Sonny Stitt, Astrud Gilberto, Kenny Barron, Al Foster, Johnny Hartman, Susannah McCorkle, Joe Albany, Sammy Davis Jr., Sylvia Syms, Morgana King, Shirley Horn, Kai Winding, Michel Legrand, Sam Donahue, and Duke Pearson among others.
