5 for Trio

5 for Trio: refreshing, modern and G-rated progressive-jazz.

About Me

The 5 for Trio was formed in Quebec City in August 2011 by Sylvain St-Onge (guitar), Mathieu Rancourt (upright bass) and Jean-François Gingras (drums) with a desire to create a new flavor in jazz. Since then, they have constantly been working to build a bridge between modern jazz and progressive music. With their determination to experiment and develop a unique sound, along with their live energy and great stage presence, they are now ready to offer a new and refreshing brand of jazz.

In January 2013, they launched Génétiquement modifié (Genetically Modified), an EP made up of five original compositions. The success of this first release has lead the 5 for Trio to play in many renowned festivals, such as the Edmundston Jazz & Blues Festival, the Festival Jazz Etcetera Lévis and the Quebec Jazz Festival.

The 5 for Trio returned to the studio in the fall of 2013 to record all ten tracks for their debut full length album: Witness & Reations. Released in April 2014, this concept album acts as a focal point for a tour of the four corners of Quebec which will include stints at both the Rimouski and Québec international jazz festivals as well as dates in many other cities. Throughout this tour, the trio puts each song into perspective by using extra-musical elements to tie each piece into an overarching storyline. With captivating atmospheres and enthusiastic presentations, the 5 for Trio proposes to carry the public away into an exciting and colorful world.

Influences: Tigran Hamasyan, Avishai Cohen, Gilad Hekselman, Neil Cowley, Ari Hoenig, The Bad Plus.
