Sometimes one needs to take a stand on musician rankings and simply declare that the greatest jazz guitarist of the modern era is Pat Metheny. His phenomenally music-wired brain, incredible instrumental skills, gorgeous compositions, and sophisticated arrangements with the Pat Metheny Group set the bar for a whole era of musicians. The logical question for this Video Highlights column, is “what is the most compelling song video featuring Metheny?” For your consideration: “Pat Metheny Group Minuano Six Eight Live HQ” on YouTube. The piece packs an ultra-memorable head with an intense Argentinian chacarera-based rhythm and a breath-taking build. Metheny’s solo starts at 1:35 and expertly quickens pace from 2:18-2:32. Listen how he creates emotion with the F Lydian open interval at 2:35. Now, pay attention to the guitarist’s facial expressions at 3:10-3:20; this is a man who is committing his soul to the song. As a bonus, the instrumental break at 3:36 displays a band that’s tighter than crazy glue, with drummer Paul Wertico driving a steam train throughout the song. The audience’s applause at the end says it all: "Minuano" is pure magic.
