Antonio Sanchez master class demonstration

Antonio Sanchez

For drummers, there’s rhythmic and limb independence… and then there’s Antonio Sánchez. Sánchez is acclaimed for his longtime collaboration with Pat Metheny and for his Birdman film soundtrack (which solely contains drum kit improvisations and classical clips). As a high-energy instrumentalist, he displays a technical fluidity and polyrhythmic mastery that has few peers on drum kit. Beginning this demonstration solo with a deceptive, understated groove, Sanchez’ musicality shines as he explores the complete sonic palette of his instrument, extracting subtle variations in cymbal and tom tones. He does this so seemingly effortlessly that his fills seem to float across the set. The master drummer’s time, as highlighted by his clave and high-hat pulses, is impeccable. Watch the breathtaking performance as the intensity builds then washes over you like a crashing ocean wave. And, as the foam subsides, one may wish to surf Sánchez’ broadening ventures in multi-instrumental recordings and electronic and acoustic blends.
